In this paper we show that being blameworthy for not blaming and being blameworthy for victim blaming are structurally similar. Each involve the two traditional contours of moral responsibility: a knowledge condition and a control condition. But interestingly, in these cases knowledge and control are importantly interrelated. Being in a relationship with another person affords us varying degrees of knowledge about them. This knowledge in turn affords agents in relationships varying degrees of influence over one another. Cases where an agent (...) is especially blameworthy for failing to blame a friend, a close colleague, or a spouse highlight this. The interdependence of these two conditions in interpersonal relationships sheds (partial) light on why victim blaming is morally wrong. We argue that victim blamers suffer from a kind of moral myopia by only focusing on what the victim could do, in virtue of their being in a relationship of some sort with their abuser, to avoid abuse. We focus specifically on cases where such moral myopia is fueled by misogynistic and hierarchical gender schema and scripts. (shrink)

1 Introduction1 In the 1980s, hermeneutics was often incorporated into deconstructionism and literary theory. Rather than focus on authorial intentions, the nature of writing itself including codes used to construct meaning, socio-economic contexts and inequalities of power,2 Gadamer introduced a different perspective; the interplay between effects of history on a reader’s understanding and the tradition(s) handed down in writing. This interplay in which a reader’s prejudices are called into question and modified by the text in a fusion of understanding and (...) topic revitalized the study of the printed word. Gadamer’s turn to language for understanding the meaning of Being also appealed to the post-modern antipathy toward modernity and metaphysics.3 If the truth and validity of interpretations are limited to communities of language, then our mode of being in history cannot but be historical. This point of view rendered Gadamer’s phenomenological hermeneutics vulnerable to the critique of moral and epistemological relativism. However, Gadamer’s theory of interpretation also stems from re-examination of the beginning of knowledge in the Pre-Socratics and Plato, and on this basis, is receptive to another dimension of inquiry than that which was trending in North America. -/- At the East-West Center, University of Hawai’i at Manoa in 1982, Chung-ying Cheng for the first time introduced onto-hermeneutics to an audience of esteemed philosophers including Li Zehou, Ren Jiyu, Feng Youlan, and Zhang Liwen.4 In contrast to schools of deconstruction and literary theory that had disengaged the interpreter from trans-historical sources of meaning and truth, Cheng explained that interpreters exist within a cosmological order inextricable from responsibility to harmonize Heaven and Earth in creative acts of interpretation. By integrating Chinese cosmology into hermeneutics through ontology, he tacitly challenged philosophers in the West to re-examine assumptions about humanity’s place in nature and by implication, Gadamer’s recovery of the beginnings of knowledge in Western philosophy. -/- Cheng’s Neo-Confucianism is inspired by the method and goals of Thomé H. Fang. The following words by Fang seem to prefigure, although in an indistinct and bundled way, aspects of Cheng’s philosophy including a Mencian theory of human nature, comprehensive observation, and creativity: “In the very process of living in concord with creative Nature, Man is charged with an ideal to be fully realized in the light of the principle of comprehensive harmony.”5 Like Fang, Cheng reinvigorates Chinese culture and language, but not solely in order to vindicate the insights of Neo-Confucianism. He has studied Western thought, from pragmatism and the analytic school to German idealism and phenomenology, to unlock and clarify philosophical concepts within the Yijing tradition and thereby render them intelligible to Anglophones. The result has been an awakening of Western scholars to the moral and cultural consequences of decoupling their thought from metaphysical foundations that are neither dogmatic nor doctrinal. -/- Not unlike the dialectic of Gadamer’s dialogue form, onto-generative hermeneutics integrates contrary positions on the same topic in order to blend both sides into a world philosophy, or as Cheng says, a “totalizing or integrative theory,”6 not to be confused with a theoretical rewording of a theory. On the contrary, the universal scope and relevance of hermeneutics stems from personal experience. Just as Gadamer, in response to faction and strife, immersed himself in Plato during the war years, and developed a method with which to harmonize opposites, so too, according to On-cho Ng, was Cheng moved by faction, strife and political persecution to develop a path toward unity.7 Gadamer taught at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, and Cheng at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa among other institutions in North America. They facilitated trans-continental educational and cultural ties. Similar experiences yield similar insights irrespective of differences of time and place. Hence, authors in this issue who reside in Europe, China and North America, delineate the differences between Gadamer and Cheng, yet also, in light of Cheng’s onto-generative method and cosmology, develop integrative theories. Due to the page-budget restriction of the publisher, certain articles of this special theme will be subsequently published in the next issue. -/- 2 Integrative Theory This special issue of The Journal of Chinese Philosophy confirms a dimension of hermeneutics that Cheng has both motivated and inspired. The contributors do not abide by the conviction that since thought is mediated by language, interpretations cannot transcend culture. On the contrary, their research exemplifies the fruits of trans-historical onto-dialogical hermeneutics within limits defined by their field inquiry, organized into Parts I and II, around three themes: language, the philosophy of history and ethics. -/- Andrew Fuyarchuk introduces the theme of ontology in relation to Gadamer’s turn to language. Fuyarchuk argues that Chung-ying Cheng’s criticism of Gadamer’s hermeneutics is informed by Heidegger’s concept of Dasein and thereby overlooks how Gadamer’s Platonic-Pythagorean problem of the division between the One and Many is harmonized in the event of language, which in turn positions Gadamer in proximity to the presupposed grounds of receptivity in Cheng’s onto-generative hermeneutics. Lauren Pfister’s contributing article addresses the year 2000 meeting between Cheng and Gadamer in Heidelberg and expands the transhistorical grounds of meaning in Gadamer to matters of theology. Pfister’s summary of the written Chinese record of their conversation indicates that Cheng does not address the role of Christian philosophy and hence, the role of the inner word in Gadamer’s hermeneutics. This is important not only for detecting changes in Cheng’s philosophical development, but also for modifying his hermeneutics along the lines of a living conversation, possibilities explored by Pfister in a sequel to the article submitted to this issue. Nevertheless, by raising the issue of how Gadamer’s turn to language for understanding the meaning of Being extends possibilities in Cheng’s thought, Pfister anticipates the article by Katarina Gajdosova. She returns to the roots of Chinese thought during the Warring States period and broadens the meaning of names in recently excavated texts. Contrary to the conventions about how to understand terms, she appeals to both Heidegger’s ontology and Cheng’s notion of receptivity and creativity to reinterpret naming in relation to cosmology. Along the same lines, insofar as the event of Being is lingual, Jay Goulding captures its emergent structure in an evolving community of scholars and scholarship. He recalls his philosophical journey toward Cheng’s philosophy that begins in conversations with Gadamer at McMaster University in Hamilton, leads to Heidegger and Asian thought, expands into turning points with teachers and colleagues from various backgrounds that by increments contributed to Goulding’s formulation of “Daoist phenomenology.” -/- Although differing traditions guide their inquiries and research, Cheng and Gadamer recall the wisdom of the past to ameliorate the fragmentation in contemporary life. This leads them to re-examine the origins of philosophy; historical roots and thus sources of creative re-interpretations East and West whose affinities are developed in contributions by Hyun Höchsmann and Friederike Assandri. Höchsmann assesses convergences and divergences in the origins of Chinese and Western philosophy (Confucius and Socrates, the Yijing and Pre-Socratics) that culminates in pairing Gadamer’s understanding of paideia in the context of Plato’s political cosmology in the Timaeus with moral and social cultivation in The Western Inscription. She delineates the limits of this comparison which in turn justifies introducing Vattimo’s notion of locality. Assandri’s comparative analysis moves between India and China, Buddhism and Tang Daoism. Based on Gadamer’s argument that writing detaches concepts from their cultural moorings, she defines and applies three levels of understanding in onto-generative hermeneutics to Buddhist terms that were assimilated into the Benji Jing and in so doing clarifies essential dimensions of Daoism. -/- Contributions by Stephen Palmquist and Nicholas Brasovan position Cheng in relation to Kant and Gadamer by way of Aristotle’s ethics respectively. On the one hand, Palmquist plots Cheng’s evolving criticism of Kant’s moral philosophy and draws on crucial dimensions of Gadamer’s hermeneutics to reposition that criticism in a constructive relation to Kant’s emphasis on the philosophical conditions of morality while also indicating how religious dimensions of his thought answer Cheng’s concerns for lived moral action. For Palmquist, Gadamer enables a constructive criticism of Cheng. On the other hand, Brasovan compares Cheng’s Yijing-based account of moral deliberation with Gadamer’s Aristotelian-based ethics and reasons that in contrast to Cheng, Gadamer’s hermeneutical consciousness is disengaged from practical knowledge. For Brasovan, Cheng is a constructive critic of Gadamer. Palmquist and Brasovan’s divergent angles on Gadamer and Cheng map onto a dialectic of contrast and complementarity that constitutes the inner logic of Cheng’s philosophy. In other words, Gadamer and Cheng ought to be read alongside one another for the sake of removing discrepancies and contradictions, which constitutes the organic structure of their thinking. -/- 3 Our Mode of Being in History Is Not Historical The conversations between Cheng and Gadamer in this issue of The Journal of Chinese Philosophy pivot on language, philosophy of history and ethics within a comparative framework of analysis, but also explore the grounds that make the comparisons possible. Those grounds are informed by Chinese cosmology, and function to wrest Gadamer from the shadow of Heideggerian facticity and reposition him within the range of Cheng’s ideas about our place in nature that is embedded in his question about how mind emerges from inorganic matter.8 -/- For Gadamer scholars of Heidegger, human finitude, our ownmost individuating death ensures that hermeneutics is always open to the other as other, always on the way toward understanding the meaning of Being. To arrest the process in a concept of “the Absolute” cannot but represent someone’s point of view, and thereby render hermeneutics indistinguishable from ideology. However, insofar as finitude is defined by them in terms of an onto-theological concept of immorality, finitude is a metaphysical concept consistent with epistemologies and confuse beings with the meaning of Being. As a result, the celebrated political value of hermeneutics to always be on the way toward an understanding of the meaning of Being admits subtle variations on the same worldview that are insufficiently self-critical. -/- Gadamer scholars of Heidegger are right. A transformation in ethos and opening to the meaning of Being depends on awareness of finitude. Yet this awareness does not yield openness to more of the same, i.e., discourse structurally incapable of coming to unity but instead, for both Gadamer and Cheng, openness to a distinctly different ontological dimension of reality. As Sandra Wawrytko and So-Seong Park indicate,9 this ontological dimension is prefigured in the experience of being-as-a-whole or the totality of all possible relations in both Chinese totemic shamanistic rituals,10 and Greek Dionysian festivals.11 Through these religious experiences human ethos and therefore consciousness is expanded and elevated from being centered on one’s ownmost concerns toward an affinity with all sentient beings from insects and plants to animals. The channel for this affinity is an auditory disposition and hence, the emotions, compassion, and feeling response. -/- The capacity for an auditory disposition, or as Gadamer calls it, listening consciousness to respond to the inter-relationality and therefore inherent balance of nature is developed through music, song and dance of the religious rituals and festivals. They facilitate the unity of mind with nature. This use of music, that transforms ordinary consciousness, explains Cheng’s emphasis on the receptivity of feeling response in comprehensive observation, and Gadamer’s emphasis on openness to the other in attunement. However, an auditory disposition characteristic of pre-literate oral cultures that reveals the “All” need not rely on religion. As theorists about the evolution of language have explained,12 modern languages preserve their pre-historical past in music or prosody. That is to say, the song and dance that revealed the totality of inter-related beings to an ethos of comprehensive observation and attunement toward beings in classical civilizations is retained in the back-and-forth movement or rhythm of the dialogue form. Our mode of being in history is a mode of being in nature – through the music of language. -/- While alerting the reader to the limits of a nominalist interpretation, Gadamer expresses the inner law of the nature as follows: “in perishing there is always becoming, and in becoming there is always perishing.”13 Considered in process, opposites generate and blend into each other. This law of nature applies to everything.14 Hence, in a manner comparable to Pfister’s concluding insights, onto-dialogical hermeneutics is not only open to discrete events of otherness but moreover, to the moving structure of reality expressed, as Gajdosova suggests, in the existential moment of naming. Considered as interplay of tension and resolution with a life of its own, the dialectic of a dialogue is self-similar to the way in which an organism grows (by instinct). There is, therefore, a sense in which the art of interpretation extends the human mind into the eternal cycles of nature such that we participate in the articulation of the inner telos/homeostasis toward which all beings strive and importantly for Gadamer scholars of Heidegger, within the material limits of energy to which our embodied minds are self-evidently subject. The article undertakes a phenomenological interpretation of the description of contingency in two late-antique models of the relationship of time and eternity — in the theory of Plotinus, and in the eschatology of Paul on the basis of the First Epistle to the Thessalonians. Contingency as a possible property not of time, but of eternity, the presence of the supertemporal in the physical world — this hypothesis promotes a new view of the relationship between time and eternity and a new (...) view of the properties of time. Time remains as immeasurable as eternity, inheriting its character as a phenomenon of consciousness. The article also compares the ideas of H. Bergson and E. Husserl on duration and memory, on the coincidence of moments and the measurability of the movement of time. A turn to Ptolemaic cosmology proposed by Q. Meillassoux seems relevant, an appeal to ancient mathematics and ontology through the optics of post-metaphysical criticism. The search for a new correlationism is significant for the philosophy of time, and contingency, like any coincidence of thought and object, the world and the subject, the signifier and the signified, leads to new forms of manifestation, new phenomena of presence, a new fullness of being in history. In this paper we consider conditional random quantities (c.r.q.’s) in the setting of coherence. Based on betting scheme, a c.r.q. X|H is not looked at as a restriction but, in a more extended way, as \({XH + \mathbb{P}(X|H)H^c}\) ; in particular (the indicator of) a conditional event E|H is looked at as EH + P(E|H)H c . This extended notion of c.r.q. allows algebraic developments among c.r.q.’s even if the conditioning events are different; then, for instance, we can give a (...) meaning to the sum X|H + Y|K and we can define the iterated c.r.q. (X|H)|K. We analyze the conjunction of two conditional events, introduced by the authors in a recent work, in the setting of coherence. We show that the conjoined conditional is a conditional random quantity, which may be a conditional event when there are logical dependencies. Moreover, we introduce the negation of the conjunction and by applying De Morgan’s Law we obtain the disjoined conditional. Finally, we give the lower and upper bounds for the conjunction and disjunction of two conditional events, by showing that the usual probabilistic properties continue to hold. (shrink)

continent. 1.1 : 3-13. / 0/ – Introduction I want to propose, as a trajectory into the philosophically weird, an absurd theoretical claim and pursue it, or perhaps more accurately, construct it as I point to it, collecting the ground work behind me like the Perpetual Train from China Mieville's Iron Council which puts down track as it moves reclaiming it along the way. The strange trajectory is the following: Kant's critical philosophy and much of continental philosophy which has followed, (...) has been a defense against horror and madness. Kant's prohibition on speculative metaphysics such as dogmatic metaphysics and transcendental realism, on thinking beyond the imposition of transcendental and moral constraints, has been challenged by numerous figures proceeding him. One of the more interesting critiques of Kant comes from the mad black Deleuzianism of Nick Land stating, “Kant’s critical philosophy is the most elaborate fit of panic in the history of the Earth.” And while Alain Badiou would certainly be opposed to the libidinal investments of Land's Deleuzo-Guattarian thought, he is likewise critical of Kant's normative thought-bureaucracies: Kant is the one author for whom I cannot feel any kinship. Everything in him exasperates me, above all his legalism—always asking Quid Juris? Or ‘Haven’t you crossed the limit?’—combined, as in today’s United States, with a religiosity that is all the more dismal in that it is both omnipresent and vague. The critical machinery he set up has enduringly poisoned philosophy, while giving great succour to the academy, which loves nothing more than to rap the knuckles of the overambitious [….] That is how I understand the truth of Monique David-Menard’s reflections on the properly psychotic origins of Kantianism. I am persuaded that the whole of the critical enterprise is set up to to shield against the tempting symptom represented by the seer Swedenborg, or against ‘diseases of the head’, as Kant puts it. An entire nexus of the limits of reason and philosophy are set up here, namely that the critical philosophy not only defends thought from madness, philosophy from madness, and philosophy from itself, but that philosophy following the advent of the critical enterprise philosophy becomes auto-vampiric; feeding on itself to support the academy. Following Francois Laruelle's non-philosophical indictment of philosophy, we could go one step further and say that philosophy operates on the material of what is philosophizable and not the material of the external world. [1] Beyond this, the Kantian scheme of nestling human thinking between our limited empirical powers and transcendental guarantees of categorical coherence, forms of thinking which stretch beyond either appear illegitimate, thereby liquefying both pre-critical metaphysics and the ravings of the mad in the same critical acid. In rejecting the Kantian apparatus we are left with two entities – an unsure relation of thought to reality where thought is susceptible to internal and external breakdown and a reality with an uncertain sense of stability. These two strands will be pursued, against the sane-seal of post-Kantian philosophy by engaging the work of weird fiction authors H.P. Lovecraft and Thomas Ligotti. The absolute inhumanism of the formers universe will be used to describe a Shoggothic Materialism while the dream worlds of the latter will articulate the mad speculation of a Ventriloquil Idealism. But first we must address the relation of philosophy to madness as well as philosophy to weird fiction. /1/ – Philosophy and Madness There is nothing that the madness of men invents which is not either nature made manifest or nature restored. Michel Foucault. Madness and Civilization. The moment I doubt whether an event that I recall actually took place, I bring the suspicion of madness upon myself: unless I am uncertain as to whether it was not a mere dream. Arthur Schopenhauer. The World as Will and Idea, Vol. 3. Madness is commonly thought of as moving through several well known cultural-historical shifts from madness as a demonic or otherwise theological force, to rationalization, to medicalization psychiatric and otherwise. Foucault's Madness and Civilization is well known for orientating madness as a form of exclusionary social control which operated by demarcating madness from reason. Yet Foucault points to the possibility of madness as the necessity of nature at least prior to the crushing weight of the church. Kant’s philosophy as a response to madness is grounded by his humanizing of madness itself. As Adrian Johnston points out in the early pages of Time Driven pre-Kantian madness meant humans were seized by demonic or angelic forces whereas Kantian madness became one of being too human. Madness becomes internalized, the external demonic forces become flaws of the individual mind. Foucault argues that, while madness is de-demonized it is also dehumanized during the Renaissance, as madmen become creatures neither diabolic nor totally human reduced to the zero degree of humanity. It is immediately clear why for Kant, speculative metaphysics must be curbed – with the problem of internal madness and without the external safeguards of transcendental conditions, there is nothing to formally separate the speculative capacities for metaphysical diagnosis from the mad ramblings of the insane mind – both equally fall outside the realm of practicality and quotidian experience. David-Menard's work is particularly useful in diagnosing the relation of thought and madness in Kant's texts. David-Menard argues that in Kant's relatively unknown “An Essay on the Maladies of the Mind” as well as his later discussion of the Seer of Swedenborg, that Kant formulates madness primarily in terms of sensory upheaval or other hallucinatory theaters. She writes: “madness is an organization of thought. It is made possible by the ambiguity of the normal relation between the imaginary and the perceived, whether this pertains to the order of sensation or to the relations between our ideas” Kant's fascination with the Seer forces Kant between the pincers of “aesthetic reconciliation” – namely melancholic withdrawal – and “a philosophical invention” – namely the critical project. Deleuze and Guattari's schizoanalysis is a combination and reversal of Kant's split, where an aesthetic over engagement with the world entails prolific conceptual invention. Their embrace of madness, however, is of course itself conceptual despite all their rhizomatic maneuvers. Though they move with the energy of madness, Deleuze and Guattari save the capacity of thought from the fangs of insanity by imbuing materiality itself with the capacity for thought. Or, as Ray Brassier puts it, “Deleuze insists, it is necessary to absolutize the immanence of this world in such a way as to dissolve the transcendent disjunction between things as we know them and as they are in themselves”. That is, whereas Kant relied on the faculty of judgment to divide representation from objectivity Deleuze attempts to flatten the whole economy beneath the juggernaut of ontological univocity. Speculation, as a particularly useful form of madness, might fall close to Deleuze and Guattari’s shaping of philosophy into a concept producing machine but is different in that it is potentially self destructive – less reliant on the stability of its own concepts and more adherent to exposing a particular horrifying swath of reality. Speculative madness is always a potential disaster in that it acknowledges little more than its own speculative power with the hope that the gibbering of at least a handful of hysterical brains will be useful. Pre-critical metaphysics amounts to madness, though this may be because the world itself is mad while new attempts at speculative metaphysics, at post-Kantian pre-critical metaphysics, are well aware of our own madness. Without the sobriety of the principle of sufficient reason we have a world of neon madness: “we would have to conceive what our life would be if all the movements of the earth, all the noises of the earth, all the smells, the tastes, all the light – of the earth and elsewhere, came to us in a moment, in an instant – like an atrocious screaming tumult of things”. Speculative thought may be participatory in the screaming tumult of the world or, worse yet, may produce its spectral double. Against theology or reason or simply commonsense, the speculative becomes heretical. Speculation, as the cognitive extension of the horrorific sublime should be met with melancholic detachment. Whereas Kant's theoretical invention, or productivity of thought, is self -sabotaging, since the advent of the critical project is a productivity of thought which then delimits the engine of thought at large either in dogmatic gestures or non-systematizable empirical wondrousness. The former is celebrated by the fiction of Thomas Ligotti whereas the latter is espoused by the tales of H.P. Lovecraft. /2/ – Weird Fiction and Philosophy. Supernatural horror, in all its eerie constructions, enables a reader to taste treats inconsistent with his personal welfare. Thomas Ligotti Songs of a Dead Dreamer. I choose weird stories because they suit my inclination best—one of my strongest and most persistent wishes being to achieve,momentarily, the illusion of some strange suspension or violation of the galling limitations of time, space, and natural law which forever imprison us and frustrate our curiosity about the infinite cosmic spaces beyond the radius of our sight and analysis H.P. Lovecraft. “Notes on Writing Weird Fiction” Lovecraft states that his creation of a story is to suspend natural law yet, at the same time, he indexes the tenuousness of such laws, suggesting the vast possibilities of the cosmic. The tension that Lovecraft sets up between his own fictions and the universe or nature is reproduced within his fictions in the common theme of the unreliable narrator; unreliable precisely because they are either mad or what they have witnessed questions the bounds of material reality. In “The Call of Cthulhu” Lovecraft writes: The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age. Despite Lovecraft's invocations of illusion, he is not claiming that his fantastic creations such as the Old Ones are supernatural but, following Joshi, are only ever supernormal. One can immediately see that instead of nullifying realism Lovecraft in fact opens up the real to an unbearable degree. In various letters and non-fictional statements Lovecraft espoused strictly materialist tenets, ones which he borrowed from Hugh Elliot namely the uniformity of law, the denial of teleology and the denial of non-material existence. Lovecraft seeks to explore the possibilities of such a universe by piling horror upon horror until the fragile brain which attempts to grasp it fractures. This may be why philosophy has largely ignored weird fiction – while Deleuze and Guattari mark the turn towards weird fiction and Lovecraft in particular, with the precursors to speculative realism as well as contemporary related thinkers have begun to view Lovecraft as making philosophical contributions. Lovecraft's own relation to philosophy is largely critical while celebrating Nietzsche and Schopenhauer. This relationship of Lovecraft to philosophy and philosophy to Lovecraft is coupled with Lovecraft's habit of mercilessly destroying the philosopher and the figure of the academic more generally in his work, a destruction which is both an epistemological destruction and an ontological destruction. Thomas Ligotti's weird fiction which he has designated as a kind of “confrontational escapism” might be best described in the following quote from one of his shortstories, “The human phenomenon is but the sum of densely coiled layers of illusion each of which winds itself on the supreme insanity. That there are persons of any kind when all there can be is mindless mirrors laughing and screaming as they parade about in an endless dream”. Whereas Lovecraft's weirdness draws predominantly from the abyssal depths of the uncharted universe, Ligotti's existential horror focuses on the awful proliferation of meaningless surfaces that is, the banal and every day function of representation. In an interview, Ligotti states: We don't even know what the world is like except through our sense organs, which are provably inadequate. It's no less the case with our brains. Our whole lives are motored along by forces we cannot know and perceptions that are faulty. We sometimes hear people say that they're not feeling themselves. Well, who or what do they feel like then? This is not to say that Ligotti sees nothing beneath the surface but that there is only darkness or blackness behind it, whether that surface is on the cosmological level or the personal. By addressing the implicit and explicit philosophical issues in Ligotti's work we will see that his nightmarish take on reality is a form of malevolent idealism, an idealism which is grounded in a real, albeit dark and obscure materiality. If Ligotti's horrors ultimately circle around mad perceptions which degrade the subject, it takes aim at the vast majority of the focus of continental philosophy. While Lovecraft's acidic materialism clearly assaults any romantic concept of being from the outside, Ligotti attacks consciousness from the inside: Just a little doubt slipped into the mind, a little trickle of suspicion in the bloodstream, and all those eyes of ours, one by one, open up to the world and see its horror [...] Not even the solar brilliance of a summer day will harbor you from horror. For horror eats the light and digests it into darkness. Clearly, the weird fiction of Lovecraft and Ligotti amount to a anti-anthrocentric onslaught against the ramparts of correlationist continental philosophy. /3/ – Shoggothic Materialism or the Formless Formless protoplasm able to mock and reflect all forms and organs and processes—viscous agglutinations of bubbling cells—rubbery fifteen-foot spheroids infinitely plastic and ductile—slaves of suggestion, builders of cities—more and more sullen, more and more intelligent, more and more amphibious, more and more imitative—Great God! What madness made even those blasphemous Old Ones willing to use and to carve such things? H.P. Lovecraft. “At the Mountains of Madness” On the other hand, affirming that the universe resembles nothing and is only formless amounts to saying that the universe is something like a spider or spit. Georges Bataille. “Formless”. The Shoggoths feature most prominently in H.P. Lovecraft's shortstory “At the Mountains of Madness” where they are described in the following manner: It was a terrible, indescribable thing vaster than any subway train – a shapeless congeries of protoplasmic bubbles, faintly self -luminous, and with myriads of temporary eyes forming and un-forming as pustules of greenish light all over the tunnel-filling front that bore down upon us, crushing the frantic penguins and slithering over the glistening floor that it and its kind had swept so evilly free of all litter. The term is a litmus test for materialism itself as the Shoggoth is an amorphous creature. The Shoggoths were living digging machines bio engineered by the Elder Things, and their protoplasmic bodies being formed into various tools by their hypnotic powers. The Shoggoths eventually became self aware and rose up against their masters in an ultimately failed rebellion. After the Elder Ones retreated into the oceans leaving the Shoggoths to roam the frozen wastes of the Antarctic. The onto-genesis of the Shoggoths and their gross materiality, index the horrifyingly deep time of the earth a concept near and dear to Lovecraft's formulation of horror as well as the fear of intelligences far beyond, and far before, the ascent of humankind on earth and elsewhere. The sickly amorphous nature of the Shoggoths invade materialism at large, where while materiality is unmistakably real ie not discursive, psychological, or otherwise overly subjectivist, it questions the relation of materialism to life. As Eugene Thacker writes: The Shoggoths or Elder Things do not even share the same reality with the human beings who encounter them—and yet this encounter takes place, though in a strange no-place that is neither quite that of the phenomenal world of the human subject or the noumenal world of an external reality. Amorphous yet definitively material beings are a constant in Lovecraft's tales. In his tale “The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadatth” Lovecraft describes Azathoth as, “that shocking final peril which gibbers unmentionably outside the ordered universe,” that, “last amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blashphemes and bubbles at the centre of all infinity,” who, “gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time”. Azathoth's name may have multiple origins but the most striking is the alchemy term azoth which is both a cohesive agent and a acidic creation pointing back to the generative and the decayed. The indistinction of generation and degradation materially mirrors the blur between the natural and the unnatural as well as life and non-life. Lovecraft speaks of the tension between the natural and the unnatural is his short story “The Unnameable.” He writes, “if the psychic emanations of human creatures be grotesque distortions, what coherent representation could express or portray so gibbous and infamous a nebulousity as the spectre of a malign, chaotic perversion, itself a morbid blasphemy against Nature?”. Lovecraft explores exactly the tension outlined at the beginning of this chapter, between life and thought. At the end of his short tale Lovecraft compounds the problem as the unnameable is described as “a gelatin—a slime—yet it had shapes, a thousand shapes of horror beyond all memory”. Deleuze suggests that becoming-animal is operative throughout Lovecraft's work, where narrators feel themselves reeling at their becoming non-human or of being the anomalous or of becoming atomized. Following Eugene Thacker however, it may be far more accurate to say that Lovecraft's tales exhibit not a becoming-animal but a becoming-creature. Where the monstrous breaks the purportedly fixed laws of nature, the creature is far more ontologically ambiguous. The nameless thing is an altogether different horizon for thought. The creature is either less than animal or more than animal – its becoming is too strange for animal categories and indexes the slow march of thought towards the bizarre. This strangeness is, as aways, some indefinite swirling in the category of immanence and becoming. Bataille begins “The Labyrinth” with the assertion that being, to continue to be, is becoming. More becoming means more being hence the assertion that Bataille's barking dog is more than the sponge. This would mean that the Shoggotth is altogether too much being, too much material in the materialism. Bataille suggests that there is an immanence between the eater and the eaten, across the species and never within them. That is, despite the chaotic storm of immanence there must remain some capacity to distinguish the gradients of becoming without reliance upon, or at least total dependence upon, the powers of intellection to parse the universe into recognizable bits, properly digestible factoids. That is, if we undo Deleuze's aforementioned valorization of sense which, for his variation of materialism, performed the work of the transcendental, but refuse to reinstate Kant's transcendental disjunction between thing and appearance, then it must be a quality of becoming-as-being itself which can account for the discernible nature of things by sense. In an interview with Peter Gratton, Jane Bennett formulates the problem thusly: What is this strange systematicity proper to a world of Becoming? What, for example, initiates this congealing that will undo itself? Is it possible to identify phases within this formativity, plateaus of differentiation? If so, do the phases/plateaus follow a temporal sequence? Or, does the process of formation inside Becoming require us to theorize a non-chronological kind of time? I think that your student’s question: “How can we account for something like iterable structures in an assemblage theory?” is exactly the right question. Philosophy has erred too far on the side of the subject in the subject-object relation and has furthermore, lost the very weirdness of the non-human. Beyond this, the madness of thought need not override. /4/ - Ventriloquial Idealism or the Externality of Thought My aim is the opposite of Lovecraft's. He had an appreciation for natural scenery on earth and wanted to reach beyond the visible in the universe. I have no appreciation for natural scenery and want the objective universe to be a reflection of a character. Thomas Ligotti. “Devotees of Decay and Desolation.” Unless life is a dream, nothing makes sense. For as a reality, it is a rank failure [….] Horror is more real than we are. Thomas Ligotti. “Professor Nobody's Little Lectures on Supernatural Horror”. Thomas Ligotti's tales are rife with mannequins, puppets, and other brainless entities which of replace the valorized subject of philosophy – that of the free thinking human being. His tales such as “The Dream of the Manikin” aim to destroy the rootedness of consciousness. James Trafford has connected the anti-egoism of Ligotti to Thomas Metzinger – where the self is at best an illusion and we plead desperately for someone else to acknowledge that we are real. Trafford has stated it thus, “Life is played out as an inescapable puppet show, an endless dream in which the puppets are generally unaware that they are trapped within a mesmeric dance of whose mechanisms they know nothing and over which they have no control”. An absolute materialism, for Ligotti, implies an alienation of the idea which leads to a ventriloquil idealism. As Ligotti notes in an interview, “the fiasco and nightmare of existence, the particular fiasco and nightmare of human existence, the sense that people are puppets of powers they cannot comprehend, etc.” And then further elaborates that,“[a]ssuming that anything has to exist, my perfect world would be one in which everyone has experienced the annulment of his or her ego. That is, our consciousness of ourselves as unique individuals would entirely disappear”. The externality of the idea leads to the unfortunate consequence of consciousness eating at itself through horror which, for Ligotti, is more real than reality and goes beyond horror-as-affect. Beyond this, taking together with the unreality of life and the ventriloquizing of subjectivity, Ligotti's thought becomes an idealism in which thought itself is alien and ultimately horrifying. The role of human thought and the relation of non-relation of horror to thought is not completely clear in Ligotti's The Conspiracy Against the Human Race. Ligotti argues in his The Conspiracy Against the Human Race,that the advent of thought is a mistake of nature and that horror is being in the sense that horror results from knowing too much. Yet, at the same time, Ligotti seems to suggest that thought separates us from nature whereas, for Lovecraft, thought is far less privileged – mind is just another manifestation of the vital principal, it is just another materialization of energy. In his brilliant “Prospects for Post-Copernican Dogmatism” Iain Grant rallies against the negative definition of dogmatism and the transcendental, and suggests that negatively defining both over-focuses on conditions of access and subjectivism at the expense of the real or nature. With Schelling, who is Grant's champion against the subjectivist bastions of both Fichte and Kant, Ligotti's idealism could be taken as a transcendental realism following from an ontological realism. Yet the transcendental status of Ligotti's thought move towards a treatment of the transcendental which may threaten to leave beyond its realist ground. Ligotti states: Belief in the supernatural is only superstition. That said, a sense of the supernatural, as Conrad evidenced in Heart of Darkness, must be admitted if one's inclination is to go to the limits of horror. It is the sense of what should not be- the sense of being ravaged by the impossible. Phenomenally speaking, the super-natural may be regarded as the metaphysical counterpart of insanity, a transcendental correlative of a mind that has been driven mad. Again, Ligotti equates madness with thought, qualifying both as supernatural while remaining less emphatic about the metaphysical dimensions of horror. The question becomes one of how exactly the hallucinatory realm of the ideal relates to the black churning matter of Lovecraft's chaos of elementary particles. In his tale “I Have a Special Plan for This World” Ligotti formulates thus: A: There is no grand scheme of things. B: If there were a grand scheme of things, the fact – the fact – that we are not equipped to perceive it, either by natural or supernatural means, is a nightmarish obscenity. C: The very notion of a grand scheme of things is a nightmarish obscenity. Here Ligotti is not discounting metaphysics but implying that if it does exist the fact that we are phenomenologically ill-equipped to perceive that it is nightmarish. For Ligotti, nightmare and horror occur within the circuit of consciousness whereas for Lovecraft the relation between reality and mind is less productive on the side of mind. It is easier to ascertain how the Kantian philosophy is a defense against the diseases of the head as Kant armors his critical enterprise from too much of the world and too much of the mind. The weird fiction of both Lovecraft and Ligotti demonstrates that there is too much of both feeding into one another in a way that corrodes the Kantian schema throughly, breaking it down into a dead but still ontologically potentiated nigredo. The haunting, terrifying fact of Ligotti's idealism is that the transcendental motion which brought thought to matter, while throughly material and naturalized, brings with it the horror that thought cannot be undone without ending the material that bears it either locally or completely. Thought comes from an elsewhere and an elsewhen being-in-thought. The unthinkable outside thought is as maddening as the unthought engine of thought itself within thought which doesn't exist except for the mind, the rotting décor of the brain. /5/ - Hyperstitional Transcendental Paranoia or Self -Expelled Thought Weird fiction has been given some direct treatment in philosophy in the mad black Deleuzianism of Nick Land. Nick Land along with others in the 1990s created the Cyber Culture Research Unit as well as the research group Hyperstition. The now defunct hyperstitional website, an outgrowth of the Cyber Culture Research Unit, defined hyperstition in the following fourfold: 1-Element of effective culture that makes itself real. 2-Fictional quantity functional as a time-traveling device. 3-Coincidence intensifier. 4-Call to the Old Ones. The distinctively Lovecraftian character of hyperstition is hard to miss as is its Deleuzo-Guattarian roots. In the opening pages of A Thousand Plateaus Deleuze and Guattari write, “We have been criticized for over-quoting literary authors. But when one writes, the only question is which other machine the literary machine can be plugged into”. The indisinction of literature and philosophy mirrors the mess of being and knowing as post-correlationist philosophy, where philosophy tries to make itself real where literature, especially the weird, aims itself at the brain-circuit of horror. The texts of both Lovecraft and Ligotti work through horror as epistemological plasticity meeting with proximity as well as the deep time of Lovecraft and the glacially slow time of paranoia in Ligotti. Against Deleuze, and following Brassier, we cannot allow the time of consciousness, the Bergsonian time of the duree, to override natural time, but instead acknowledge that it is an unfortunate fact of existence as a thinking being. Horror-time, the time of consciousness, with all its punctuated moments and drawn out terrors, cannot compare to the deep time of non-existence both in the unreachable past and the unknown future. The crystalline cogs of Kant's account of experience as the leading light for the possibility of metaphysics must be throughly obliterated. His gloss of experience in Prolegomena to any Future Metaphysics could not be more sterile: Experience consists of intuitions, which belong to the sensibility, and of judgments, which are entirely a work of the understanding. But the judgments which the understanding makes entirely out of sensuous intuitions are far from being judgments of experience. For in the one case the judgment connects only the perceptions as they are given in sensuous intuition [....] Experience consists in the synthetic connection of appearances in consciousness, so far as this connection is necessary. Here it is difficult to dismiss the queasiness that Kant's legalism induces upon sight for both Badiou and David-Menard. Kant's thought becomes, as Foucault says when reflecting on Sade's text in relation to nature, “the savage abolition of itself”. For Badiou, Kant's philosophy simply closes off too much of the outside, freezing the world of thought in an all too limited formalism. Critical philosophy is simply the systematized quarantine on future thinking, on thinking which would threaten the formalism which artificially grants thought its own coherency in the face of madness. Even the becoming-mad of Deleuze, while escaping the rumbling ground, makes grounds for itself, mad grounds but grounds which are thinkable in their affect. The field of effects allows for Deleuze's aesthetic and radical empiricism, in which effects and/or occasions make up the material of the world to be thought as a chaosmosis of simulacra. Given a critique of an empiricism of aesthetics, of the image, it may be difficult to justify an attack on Kantian formalism with the madness of literature, which does not aim to make itself real but which we may attempt to make real. That is, how do Lovecraft's and Ligotti's materials, as materials for philosophy to work on, differ from either the operative formalisms of Kant or the implicitly formalized images of Deleuzian empiricism? It is simply that such texts do not aim to make themselves real, and make claims to the real which are more alien to us than familiar, which is why their horror is immediately more trustworthy. This is the madness which Blanchot discusses in The Infinite Conversation through Cervantes and his knight – the madness of book-life, of the perverse unity of literature and life a discussion which culminates in the discussion of one of the weird's masters, that of Kafka. The text is the knowing of madness, since madness, in its moment of becoming-more-mad, cannot be frozen in place but by the solidifications of externalizing production. This is why Foucault ends his famous study with works of art. Furthermore extilligence, the ability to export the products of our maligned brains, is the companion of the attempts to export, or discover the possibility of intelligences outside of our heads, in order for philosophy to survive the solar catastrophe. To borrow again from Deleuze, writing is inseparable from becoming. The mistake is to believe that madness is reabsorbed by extilligence, by great works, or that it could be exorcised by the expelling of thought into the inorganic or differently organic. Going out of our heads does not guarantee we will no longer mean we cannot still go out of our minds. This is simply because of the outside, of matter, or force, or energy, or thing-in-itself, or Schopenhauerian Will. In Lovecraft’s “The Music of Erich Zahn” an “impoverished student of metaphysics” becomes intrigued by strange viol music coming from above his room. After meeting the musician the student discovers that each night he plays frantic music at a window in order to keep some horridness at bay, some “impenetrable darkness with chaos and pandemonium”. The aesthetic defenses provided by the well trained brain can bear the hex of matter for so long, the specter of unalterability within it which too many minds obliterate, collapsing everything before the thought of thought as thinkable or at least noetically mutable on our own terms. Transcendental paranoia is the concurrent nightmare and promise of Paul Humphrey's work, of being literally out of our minds. It is the gothic counterpart of thinking non-conceptually but also of thinking never belonging to any instance of purportedly solid being. As Bataille stated, “At the boundary of that which escapes cohesion, he who reflects within cohesion realizes there is no longer any room for him” Thought is immaterial only to the degree that it is inhuman, it is a power that tries, always with failure, to ascertain its own genesis. Philosophy, if it can truly return to the great outdoors, if it can leave behind the dead loop of the human skull, must recognize not only the non-priority of human thought, but that thought never belongs to the brain that thinks it, thought comes from somewhere else. To return to the train image from the beginning “a locomotive rolling on the surface of the earth is the image of continuous metamorphosis” this is the problem of thought, and of thinking thought, of being no longer able to isolate thought, with only a thought-formed structure. [1] One of the central tenets of Francois Laruelle's non-philosophy is that philosophy has traditionally operated on material already presupposed as thinkable instead of trying to think the real in itself. Philosophy, according to Laruelle, remains fixated on transcendental synthesis which shatters immanence into an empirical datum and an a prori factum which are then fused by a third thing such as the ego. Argumentationen sind gültig, wenn sie prinzipiell das Erkennen anleiten können; d. (...) h. wenn die genannten Akzeptabilitätsbedingungen hinreichend sind, wenn sie tatsächlich erfüllt (die Argumente also wahr) sind und wenn es irgendjemanden gibt, der zwar die Akzeptabilität der Argumente, nicht aber die der These erkannt hat. Eine gültige Argumentation ist adäquat, um einen bestimmten Adressaten rational zu überzeugen, wenn dieser u. a. die Akzeptabilität der Argumente, nicht aber die der These erkannt hat. Die in gültigen Argumentationen als erfüllt beurteilten Akzeptabilitätsbedingungen sind Konkretisierungen allgemeiner Erkenntnisprinzipien für die spezifische These, z. B. des deduktiven Erkenntnisprinzips: 'Eine Proposition ist wahr, wenn sie von wahren Propositionen logisch impliziert wird.' oder des erkenntnisgenetischen Erkenntnisprinzips: 'Eine Proposition ist wahr, wenn sie korrekt verifiziert worden ist.' Eine Konkretisierung des deduktiven Prinzips für eine These p wäre z. B.: 'p ist wahr, 1. wenn q und r wahr sind und 2. wenn q und r zusammen p logisch implizieren.' Sind beide Bedingungen erfüllt, so könnte 'q; r; also p.' eine gültige deduktive Argumentation sein. Die verschiedenen Argumentationstypen unterscheiden sich danach, auf welchem Erkenntnisprinzip sie basieren. Das argumentativ angeleitete Erkennen der Akzeptabilität der These funktioniert so: Der Adressat benutzt das von ihm (zumindest implizit) gewußte allgemeine Erkenntnisprinzip als Checkliste, auf der er nach dem Vorbringen der Argumente abhakt, welche Akzeptabilitätsbedingung des Erkenntnisprinzips durch das Zutreffen des Arguments jeweils erfüllt wird. Auf der Basis dieser Funktionsbestimmung werden in der "Praktischen Argumentationstheorie" (erstmalig) präzise Gültigkeitskriterien für Argumentationen allgemein und für mehrere spezielle Argumentationstypen entwickelt, erkenntnistheoretisch begründet und auf komplexe Argumentationsbeispiele aus Philosophie, Wissenschaft, Technik und Kultur angewendet. Die Analyse der erkenntnistheoretischen Grundlagen - der zugrundeliegenden Erkenntnisprinzipien - vor allem der interpretierenden und praktischen Argumentationen ist zudem von erheblicher Bedeutung weit über die Argumentationstheorie hinaus: für die Interpretationstheorie, die Handlungstheorie und die praktische Philosophie. Vor etwa einem Jahrhundert entwickelte sich im deutschsprachigen Raum imRahmen einer allgemeinen Charakterisierung unserer ästhetischen Erfahrungvon Kunst eine umfassende Debatte über die Natur und die Möglichkeit vonGefühlen über fiktionale Charaktere und Situationen. Die damalige Debatteweist große Ähnlichkeit zur heutigen analytischen Debatte über das Paradoxonder Fiktion auf. Trotz des unterschiedlichen jeweiligen historischen Kontextesfindet sich in der analytischen Debatte und in der Philosophie zu Beginn des20. Jahrhunderts fast der gleiche Lösungsansatz. Gefühle über Fiktionen seienQuasi-Gefühle, d.h. ein gefühlsartiges Phänomen mit einer Realität sui (...) generis ,dem im Unterschied zu den wirklichen Gefühlen kein Urteil über die Existenzdes Objektes zugrunde liegt und dem die Verbindung zur Motivation fehlt. Zieldieses Aufsatzes ist es, eine Untersuchung der These der Quasi-Gefühle An-fang des 20. Jahrhunderts zu unternehmen sowie die Analogien zur heutigenDebatte zu zeigen. Der Aufsatz baut sich um drei thematische Achsen herumauf. Zunächst wird eine historische Darstellung der These der Gefühle über Fiktionen bei Groos, Lipps, Lange, Geiger und Külpe unternommen. Diese bil-det den Rahmen für die Debatte über die Quasi-Gefühle in der Grazer Schule.Anschließend wird die Aufmerksamkeit auf die Diskussion über Quasi-Gefühle bei Meinong, Witasek, Saxinger und Schwarz gerichtet. Scrutiny (1932-1953) was one of the most important critical reviews of the last century. Its editors and contributors included F. R. Leavis, Q. D. Leavis, Denys Thompson, L. C. Knights, D. W. Harding, W. H. Mellers, H. A. Mason, among others. In recasting Scrutiny’s critique of mass culture by way of Alisdair MacIntyre’s After Virtue (1981), I hope to show that the Scrutiny project not only dramatizes the conflicts internal to what MacIntyre calls emotivist culture, but provides a new way (...) of looking at the group’s relation to the culture industry, its purported elitism, and its deep ties with a communitarian rather than socialist politics. RESUMO A alimentação é o fator que mais onera um sistema de produção animal. Assim, a utilização de diferentes estratégias de alimentação dos animais ainda é o grande desafio da nutrição animal, principalmente, levando em consideração as exigências nutricionais de diferentes categorias de ruminantes, em especial bovinos em regiões tropicais, haja vista que a sazonalidade na produção de forragens afeta diretamente a produção bovina, promovendo inadequação no atendimento das exigências nutricionais dos animais principalmente em minerais e vitaminas. Uma alimentação que (...) não atenda as exigências nutricionais dos ruminantes gera prejuízos no sistema de produção, além de, em casos mais graves, ocasionar a perda do animal. Estudos que abordam o efeito e a importância de vitaminas e minerais na nutrição bovina são escassos e necessários. Recentemente a National Research Council (NRC) apresentou novos registros das exigências nutricionais das vitaminas e minerais. Essas alterações proporcionam um impacto econômico significativo em relação à nutrição animal. Thus, the use of different animal feeding strategies is still the great challenge of animal nutrition, taking into account the nutritional requirements of different categories of ruminants, especially cattle in tropical regions, given that seasonality in forage production directly affects cattle production, promoting inadequacy in meeting the nutritional requirements of animals, mainly in minerals and vitamins. A diet that does not meet the nutritional requirements of ruminants generates losses in the production system, in addition to, in more serious cases, causing the loss of the animal. Studies that address the effect and importance of vitamins and minerals in bovine nutrition are scarce and necessary. Recently the National Research Council (NRC) presented new records of the nutritional requirements of vitamins and minerals. These changes provide a significant economic impact on animal nutrition. INTRODUÇÃO -/- A produção bovina no Brasil é fundamentalmente em condições de pastoreio, isto é, à pasto. Dado que as pastagens e as forragens não suprem as exigências minerais dos bovinos, principalmente na seca, a suplementação mineral desses animais torna-se uma prática essencial e obrigatória para obtenção de êxito na produção de carne e leite. Negligenciar os requerimentos minerais dos bovinos pode levar ao aparecimento de alterações metabólicas diretamente relacionadas com o desempenho produtivo do rebanho, além de complicações mínimas ou (...) expressivas sobre o sistema reprodutivo e a fertilidade dos animais. Os requisitos minerais dependem do nível de produção e de cada categoria animal, logo, as práticas e atividades destinadas ao aumento na produção de carne e a taxa de crescimento dos animais exigem maior atenção à suplementação mineral. A formulação de suplementos minerais permite corrigir os desequilíbrios e deficiências desses elementos nas dietas dos animais criados para engorda à pasto. Sendo assim, para formular um suplemento mineral adequado é necessário, acima de tudo, conhecer as deficiências e os desequilíbrios minerais na região, as exigências nutricionais dos animais em função do seu estado produtivo e sua condição metabólica, além da condição mineral do alimento base (gramíneas, forragens, leguminosas etc.) e a composição das fontes minerais e sua biodisponibilidade. A finalidade deste trabalho é fornecer ao leitor a informação necessária para formular um suplemento mineral, considerando o aporte da dieta base, os requerimentos minerais dos animais e as fontes de minerais disponíveis no mercado. -/- 1. OS MINERAIS E SUAS FUNÇÕES -/- Dentro da nutrição animal, os minerais cumprem diferentes e essenciais funções dentro do organismo, logo desempenham um papel de destaque entre os nutrientes. As quantidades exigidas de cada mineral variam em função da espécie, idade e estado fisiológico, isto é, estado produtivo. Na produção animal, é dada ênfase a energia e a proteína como sendo nutrientes imprescindíveis para o bom desempenho e crescimento do animal, no entanto, há os defensores de que os minerais são mais importantes quando consideram o fósforo como elemento constituinte das proteínas, da ATP e de diversas enzimas. Dado que os alimentos não possuem o aporte de minerais requeridos pelos animais, a suplementação é uma prática de manejo indispensável. Em sistema de criação intensiva, esse manejo é fácil uma vez que se conhece a dieta e a quantidade de alimentos que o animal ingere, logo se conhece a composição mineral do alimento e o cálculo é feito para fornecer o défice de mineral do alimento, por exemplo, o grão de milho seco moído na dieta fornece 0,05% de cálcio, dada que a exigência de Ca para bovinos de corte é de 0,25%, é necessário suplementar um composto que forneça os 0,2% de défice da dieta. Por sua vez, em sistema de criação extensiva, a suplementação mineral não é uma tarefa fácil, uma vez que não se conhece a composição nem a quantidade dos alimentos que os animais comem no período de um dia, no entanto é feita uma estimativa da ingestão dos alimentos disponíveis à pasto para se calcular a quantidade a ser suplementada. Dentro da nutrição animal, é comum dividir-se os minerais em macro e micro, de acordo com a exigência do animal. Os macrominerais ocorrem em concentração superior a 100 mg/kg e costumam ser expressos em porcentagem. Já os microminerais são os elementos que o animal exige em menor quantidade, sendo inferior a 80 mg/kg. O fato de um mineral ocorrer em maior quantidade no corpo do animal não significa menor grau de importância. Para que um mineral seja considerado essencial foi estabelecida quatro condições primordiais de funções no organismo, logo esses minerai precisam: -/-  Estar presente nos tecidos dos animais em concentrações constantes;  A deficiência deve causar a presença de anormalidades fisiológicas e/ou estruturais, desde que a dieta possua todos os outros elementos em concentrações ideais e não tóxicas. Um exemplo seria o raquitismo com a falta demasiada de Ca;  A adição desse mineral essencial deve reverter o quadro da anormalidade;  As anormalidades que foram induzidas pela deficiência de um dado elemento deverá ser acompanhada de alterações bioquímicas que são revertidas ou prevenidas quando a deficiência cessa. • MACROMINERAIS -/- Os macrominerais que os bovinos de corte requerem incluem o cálcio, magnésio, fósforo, potássio, sódio, cloro e enxofre. Geralmente esses minerais acumulam-se mais nos ossos do que outra parte do corpo. a) Cálcio e fósforo (Ca e P) O cálcio e o fósforo são os principais componentes minerais do esqueleto. Cerca de 99% do Ca total do corpo e 80% do P total do corpo são armazenados nos ossos. Os estoques esqueléticos de Ca e P são usados para atender a inadequações dietéticas de curto prazo. Deficiências de longo prazo de qualquer um pode causar ossos enfraquecidos e, com isso, os ossos podem até quebrar. -/- Segundo a literatura, a presença Ca é de extrema importância para as funções:  Formação dos ossos e dentes;  Regulação dos batimentos cardíacos e irritabilidade dos nervos;  Coagulação do sangue e do leite;  Produção de leite (lactação);  Ativação de enzimas como a lípase pancreática e fosfatase ácida; -/- O P, por sua vez é imprescindível para as funções:  Formação dos ossos e dentes;  Produção de leite (lactação);  Regulação do mecanismo ácido-base;  Metabolismo dos nutrientes (carboidratos, proteínas, lipídeos, vitaminas)  Constituição de enzimas como a pepsina e xantina oxidase;  Constituição das proteínas. -/- O Ca e o P também desempenham papéis importantes em outras funções corporais. Uma diminuição em um ou ambos pode causar uma diminuição no ganho de peso e/ou uma diminuição na eficiência do ganho. Durante a lactação, quantidades baixas de ambos reduzirão a produção de leite. Uma vaca leiteira de alta produtividade requer três vezes mais Ca do que uma vaca não-lactante. Uma deficiência de P pode atrasar a puberdade nas novilhas e pode atrasar o regresso do cio das vacas adultas no pós-parto. Os bovinos também precisam de quantidades corretas de Ca para que os sistemas nervoso e muscular funcionem corretamente. O uso adequado de Ca e P é afetado não só pela quantidade de cada mineral ingerido, mas também pela sua proporção. A relação Ca:P ideal é de cerca de 1,5:1, com uma faixa de 1:1 a 4:1 sendo satisfatória. Em algumas rações de alta concentração, razões superiores a 2:1 têm sido bem sucedidas; essa é uma característica da relação sinérgica entre o Ca e o P, em que um auxilia na absorção do outro. Deve-se estar atento a relação citada, uma vez que uma relação para bovinos superior a 4:1 pode causar a presença de cálculos renais. A maioria das gramíneas possuem uma quantidade satisfatória de Ca. Leguminosas como alfafa, amendoim, e feno de soja são boas fontes de Ca, mas a silagem de milho e sorgo são más fontes de Ca. Em geral, a maioria dos concentrados são fontes relativamente pobres em Ca. Uma exceção é a polpa cítrica, que é relativamente alta em concentração de cálcio (1,9%). O milho, os subprodutos do milho e os grãos de sorgo têm um teor de cálcio particularmente baixo, e os bovinos alimentados com cereais ou dietas à base de silagem de milho necessitam de suplementação desse mineral. A maioria das forragens é pobre em P, particularmente no final da estação de crescimento. O gado é mais propenso a possuir deficiência em P durante o inverno, quando, muitas vezes, sobrevivem alimentados com forragens secas. Os concentrados contêm concentrações moderadas a elevadas de P. Os suplementos proteicos, como a farinha de sementes de algodão e a farinha de soja, contêm concentrações moderadas, ao passo que muitos dos alimentos derivados, como os grãos de destiladores, de glúten de milho e a farinha de trigo, apresentam concentrações elevadas de P. A deficiência tanto de Ca quanto de P pode causar raquitismo em animais jovens e osteomalácia, isto é, perda da massa óssea em animais adultos. A deficiência em conjunto de ambos causa retardo no crescimento e piora na conversão ou eficiência alimentar, todavia a deficiência do P é mais severa já que o mesmo é constituinte das proteínas. Como os solos do Brasil são deficientes em P, as pastagens são pobres em fornecer o elemento, sendo a suplementação o melhor método de prevenção da deficiência e até do botulismo quando os animais ingerem ossos na busca pelo mineral. Apesar desses minerais não serem considerados tóxicos, a presença de excesso de um pode prejudicar a utilização do outro. O excesso de Ca é mais comum que o de P, de acordo com a ocorrência do Ca e o alto custo do P. Segundo o NRC, 2005 os níveis máximos para bovinos são de 1,5% para o Ca e de 0,7% para o P. Já na dieta as exigências requeridas para bovinos de corte é de 0,2 a 0,3% de Ca e de 0,19 a 0,25% de P (NRC, 2016). Já para bovinos leiteiros na dieta o Ca deve estar presente entre 0,4 e 0,6% e o P entre 0,2 a 0,4% (NRC, 2004) dependendo do nível de produção leiteira da vaca. As melhores fontes de Ca e P são o milho, farelo de soja, farelo de trigo e o farelo de algodão. b) Sódio e cloro (Na e Cl) O Na está presente na ordem de 0,15% do corpo animal. Já que sua função é mais fisiológica que nutricional sua deficiência é comum. Uma das principais funções deste elemento está associada a manutenção da pressão osmótica e sobre o equilíbrio ácido-base além de participar da absorção de carboidratos. Ainda assim, aumenta a retenção de líquidos e, em fêmeas primíparas, um problema comum é o edema de úbere em função do baixo desenvolvimento circulatório, tendo como principal meio de prevenção e/ou tratamento a diminuição do mineral na dieta. O Na também é um componente da saliva dos ruminantes que auxilia na manutenção do pH ruminal para uma boa digestão. O Cl é fundamental na regulação da pressão osmótica, do transporte de CO2 e O2 pelo sangue, e no equilíbrio ácido-base. Além disso, é constituinte do ácido clorídrico que é secretado pelo abomaso e cumpre um papel determinante na digestão das proteínas. O sódio e o cloro (sal) proporcionam a função adequada dos sistemas nervoso e muscular. Ajudam a regular o pH do corpo e a quantidade de água retida no mesmo. Uma deficiência destes elementos provoca perda de apetite e ganhos de peso ineficientes ou perda de peso corporal. O Na é geralmente deficiente em dietas, mas os níveis de Cl são geralmente adequados. Ambos os minerais estão presentes em tecidos moles e fluidos e há muito pouco armazenamento desses elementos, de modo que uma fonte diária e constante deve ser fornecida. Geralmente, os ruminantes necessitam de 0,1% de Na presente na ração. As necessidades diárias de Na para animais em crescimento e fêmeas gestantes não lactantes é de 1,5 g/100 kg de PV. A temperatura ambiente também influencia sobre a exigência do animal, de modo que quando a temperatura está entre 25 e 30 ºC é adicionado 0,1 g/100 kg de PV para mantença, já em temperaturas superiores a 30 ºC é requerido um adicional de 0,5 g/100 kg de PV também para mantença. Para crescimento o animal entre 150 e 600 kg de PV exige cerca de 1,4 g/kg de ganho de peso. Os bovinos exigem cerca de 0,1% de sódio em sua dieta diária. A deficiência de Na afeta o apetite, ganho de peso, armazenamento de energia e a síntese de proteína e gordura. Logo, os principais sintomas se manifestam no consumo de terra, urina, diminuição do apetite, perda de peso e pelagem opaca. Os ruminantes são os mais afetados, uma vez que o capim apresenta uma concentração baixa e deficiente de Na em sua composição. A intoxicação por Na pode ser agravada pela deficiência de K. No entanto, a intoxicação pode ser evitada desde que haja água em abundância e disponível aos animais à vontade. O nível máximo tolerável de sal na dieta do bovino deve ser de 4,5%. Para os bovinos a ingestão de 0,40 g/100 kg de PV já diminui a ingestão de alimentos. Para o Cl os requerimentos se resumem basicamente através do Na, uma vez que o animal é suplementado através do NaCl. Uma maneira prática de atender às exigências de Cl é o fornecimento da mesma quantidade de Na, ou seja, uma relação 1:1. Logo, como os bovinos requerem 0,1% de Na para o Cl seriam as mesmas. Detalhadamente, para a mantença o bovino exige 2,25 g/100 kg de PV e de 1 g/100 kg de PV para crescimento em animais entre 150 e 600 kg, já para o último terço da gestação o ideal é o animal ingerir 1 g/dia de Cl. A deficiência de Cl dá-se pela carência de Na, uma vez que a suplementação é conjunta. No entanto, os principais sintomas da deficiência é a perda de peso, anorexia, letargia, polidipsia e poliúria. Em temperaturas maiores, as perdas de Cl pela sudorese são maiores que as perdas de Na. O excesso de Cl na dieta causa alterações no equilíbrio ácido-base. A intoxicação ocorre pelo consumo elevado de NaCl possuindo, com isso, os mesmos sintomas do Na. O animal consumirá voluntariamente mais sal quando a forragem é jovem e suculenta (com 88% de absorção) do que quando amadurecida. O gado alimentado com silagem consumirá mais sal do que os alimentados com feno, e o consumo é maior em bovinos alimentados com dietas de altas fibras (volumosos) do que naqueles com dietas de alta concentração (rações). A principal fonte de Na e Cl é o cloreto de sódio (NaCl) com 39% de Na e 60% de Cl possuindo uma absorção aparente de 100%. Como regra geral, o gado consome 0,005 a 0,010% do seu peso corporal de sal diariamente. Por exemplo, uma vaca adulta pesando 550 kg deve consumir cerca de 27,5 gramas de sal/dia (550 kg x 0,00005 = 27,5 gramas). c) Magnésio (Mg) O magnésio é essencial para o funcionamento adequado de enzimas e do sistema nervoso e para o metabolismo eficiente dos carboidratos. Está presente na proporção de 0,05% do corpo do animal, sendo que 80% destes estão presentes nos ossos e o restante nos tecidos moles (o tecido muscular possui mais Mg do que Ca). O Mg é utilizado como solução tamponante do rúmen se utilizado na ordem de 6 a 10 kg por tonelada de ração. As principais funções do Mg no organismo são a formação do esqueleto (ossos e dentes); transferência dos impulsos nervosos; como ativador de enzimas como as hexoquinases e atpases e participa da digestão da celulose no rúmen. Os principais sintomas da deficiência de Mg são a queda da pressão sanguínea, hiperirritabilidade, incoordenação motora, convulsão e, em casos mais graves, a morte. Uma deficiência de Mg é incomum, exceto para vacas pastando gramíneas em crescimento ou pequenas pastagens de grãos durante o final do inverno e início da primavera, o que pode causar tetania dos pastos (doença rara no Brasil), uma desordem metabólica grave e às vezes fatal. Uma alta taxa de nitrogênio e fertilização de potássio no solo contribui para a manifestação e/ou agravação do quadro de tetania das pastagens (TP). O excesso de K inibe a absorção de Mg tanto na forragem como nos animais (relação de antagonismo). A TP geralmente ocorre após um longo período frio combinado com altos níveis de nitrogênio e fertilização do pasto com K. As vacas em lactação são particularmente suscetíveis a TP. A TP geralmente pode ser evitada alimentando os bovinos com uma mistura mineral contendo óxido de magnésio. Uma mistura mineral contendo 10 a 14% de Mg consumido a 110 gramas por dia deve fornecer Mg adequado. A ingestão adequada de sal também é importante para a prevenção da TP. Deve-se evitar usar blocos duros para complementar o sal quando o gado está em risco de TP; logo, o mais indicado é o fornecimento de sal em uma forma solta para permitir o consumo adequado de sal e de forma à vontade. Quando a TP não é um risco, os blocos podem ser usados para complementar os minerais. Os animais com tetania respondem quase imediatamente a uma infusão intravenosa de gluconato de cálcio e magnésio. Os bovinos de corte requerem cerca de 1 a 2 g de Mg/kg de alimento. Na formulação de 1 tonelada de ração o elemento deverá compor entre 6 a 10 kg do total. Caso haja deficiência, é mais fácil fornecer o Mg como suplemento mineral na ordem de 15 g/vaca/dia e para o tratamento da deficiência é necessária a injeção subcutânea de 200 a 300 ml de sulfato ou lactato de Mg a 20%. O nível máximo de inclusão do Mg na dieta é de 0,6% (NRC, 2005). O criador pode suplementar o animal junto com o bicarbonato de sódio na ordem de 270 g de bicarbonato e 180 g de óxido de Mg/vaca/dia. No organismo animal, apenas 16% do elemento é absorvido. Mesmo o milho, pobre em minerais, fornece 1,2 g/kg do mineral, quantidade suficiente para os bovinos de corte. As principais fontes de Mg são os farelos de trigo, algodão e de soja, o milho, a farinha de carne e ossos, o sulfato e o carbonato de Mg (com 44% de coeficiente de absorção) e o óxido de Mg (entre 28 e 49% de coeficiente de absorção). Figura 1: bloco de sal rosa do Himalaia para bovinos e equinos. d) Potássio (K) O K é o terceiro mineral mais abundante do corpo e é um dos elementos primordiais para o animal, no entanto sua ingestão deverá ser diária, uma vez que não há depósito do mesmo no organismo animal. As principais funções do K são sobre o equilíbrio ácido-base através da neutralização dos ácidos; na pressão osmótica; no balanço iônico com outros elementos; na transmissão nervosa; como freio para os batimentos cardíacos; na prevenção da tetania quando há excesso de Ca ou a deficiência de K; além de participar da síntese proteica, do metabolismo de carboidratos, da formação de glicogênio, da quebra da glicose e na quantidade de água retida no corpo. A temperatura ambiente é um dos fatores que interfere na quantidade de K a ser exigida pelo gado. Estudos do NRC, 2001 demonstram que a uma temperatura entre 25 e 30 ºC é necessária a adição de 0,04 g de K para cada 100 kg de PV para mantença; temperaturas superiores a 30 ºC exigem a adição de 0,4 g de K para cada 100 kg de PV para mantença. As gramíneas, particularmente no início do crescimento, contêm quantidades adequadas de K para o gado em pastoreio e a suplementação é raramente necessária. No entanto, o K pode, ocasionalmente, ser encontrado em baixas concentrações em forragens estocadas ou feno que recebeu água da chuva antes do enfardamento, uma vez que o K é solúvel e vai lixiviar a partir da forragem. Uma deficiência de K é difícil de ocorrer em condições de pastejo, no entanto, quando se fornece uma dieta rica em concentrado como as usadas em sistema de confinamento, uma deficiência pode ocorrer; o consumo elevado de sal (NaCl) e condições estressantes também podem ocasionar uma deficiência. Os sinais de deficiência são de difícil percepção, no entanto, incluem um retardo no crescimento (carência no metabolismo proteico), fraqueza muscular, paralisia, redução do consumo de alimentos, perda de peso, queda de pelo e consumo de terra na tentativa de suprir o mineral no organismo. A intoxicação é rara, no entanto, o nível máximo permitido é de 2% da dieta dos bovinos de corte. O excesso de K é excretado na urina. Em geral os grãos possuem uma menor concentração do elemento do que as forragens. As forragens geralmente possuem níveis superiores a 1% em sua composição com uma absorção de 85%, o que as torna a melhor fonte de K para o gado que exige 0,65% de K na dieta. Outras fontes de K são o cloreto e o sulfato do mesmo com uma absorção superior a 90%. e) Enxofre (S) O enxofre é uma parte dos aminoácidos sulfurados essenciais como a metionina, cistina, cisteína, homocisteína e taurina que compõem as proteínas. Como o rúmen sintetiza os aminoácidos sulfurados, a suplementação para bovinos de corte pode ser através de fontes de S inorgânicas. As principais funções do S limitam-se a constituição de compostos orgânicos essenciais para o organismo, podemos citar compostos da cartilagem, do trato gastrintestinal e reprodutivo e da queratina presente nos chifres, cascos, pele e pelos. Também atua como pontes dissulfeto sobre enzimas como a glutationa peroxidase (do metabolismo oxidativo) e ainda sobre o equilíbrio iônico usado para a formulação de dieta aniônica para vacas no pré-parto. Uma deficiência de enxofre na dieta de bovinos de corte não é provável que ocorra em condições normais de alimentação, porém é bastante comum. Um dos sintomas da deficiência do mineral é o baixo desenvolvimento e crescimento do animal já que o mesmo é primordial para a síntese proteica. Outros sintomas da carência estão relacionados com a formação inadequada dos compostos que são constituídos pelo elemento e que estão presentes nos chifres, pelos, cascos e pele. Por sua vez, é mais provável que o elemento esteja presente em excesso, o que pode interferir no metabolismo do cobre, resultando em uma deficiência de Cu (relação de antagonismo). Além disso, o excesso de S pode reduzir a ingestão de alimentos e causar uma condição de lesão cerebral conhecida como polioencefalomalacia (PEM). O excesso de S causa intoxicação que é comum em bovinos de corte já que sua dieta é suplementada com o elemento. O nível considerado tóxico é de 0,3% em dietas com alto concentrado e de 0,5% em dietas com alta forragem. Os bovinos de corte requerem a presença de enxofre na dieta na razão entre 0,08 e 0,16% (NRC, 2016). A principal fonte de S seria a flor de enxofre ou enxofre elemental que possui 96% do mineral, mas com menor biodisponibilidade. Outras fontes de S são o ventilado com 70% de S e os compostos misturados, isto é, que não possuem somente S como o sulfato de magnésio com 13%, sulfato de P com 18% e sulfato de sódio com 35% de S. Certos subprodutos, como os grãos de destiladores e o glúten de milho, contêm concentrações mais elevadas de S, que devem ser tidas em conta no equilíbrio da ração. O S é frequentemente adicionado indiretamente à mistura mineral através de formas de sulfato dos microminerais. • MICROMINERAIS Os bovinos de corte requerem cerca de 10 microminerais. Sete dos 10 microminerais estabeleceram requisitos, incluindo ferro, manganês, cobre, zinco, selênio, cobalto e iodo. Os microminerais cromo, molibdênio e níquel não têm uma exigência estabelecida e não são, normalmente, adicionados a misturas minerais na dieta dos bovinos de corte. Apenas três dos microminerais (cobre, zinco e selênio) são susceptíveis de ser deficientes em dietas de bovinos à pasto. Além disso, os microminerais acumulam-se mais no fígado que em qualquer outra parte do corpo, com exceção de manganês que se acumula mais nos ossos que no fígado. a) Cobalto (Co) O cobalto funciona como um componente da vitamina B12, que é sintetizada no rúmen pelas bactérias. Somente 3% do mineral na dieta é utilizado na síntese da vitamina. As principais funções do elemento estão associadas a vitamina que desempenha um papel de importância no organismo como matéria-prima dos microrganismos ruminais para a formação de propionato (ácido graxo volátil importante na síntese da glicose), síntese de purinas e pirimidinas, síntese de metionina, formação de proteínas, metabolismo de carboidratos e gorduras, além de ser necessária para a síntese de hormônios da tireoide. Os bovinos de corte exigem a presença do elemento em 0,15 mg/kg de dieta. A deficiência inclui sinais como diminuição do consumo de alimentos, crescimento retardado, anemia, baixa imunidade por dano na função dos neutrófilos e pelagem opaca. Os bezerros e novilhos são mais susceptíveis a deficiência. Na prática, geralmente é adicionado na mistura mineral em aproximadamente 10 ppm (0,01 g/kg) para garantir que não haja deficiência. A intoxicação por Co é difícil de ocorrer, no entanto afetam os animais que não recebem suplementação, quando há intoxicação os principais sintomas são a diminuição do consumo de alimentos, perda de peso e alterações no sangue. Os bovinos toleram níveis máximos de até 25 mg/kg/dieta. Os requerimentos do mineral aumentam conforme é fornecida uma dieta fundamentalmente concentrada. A maioria das forragens e subprodutos da agroindústria possuem níveis adequados de Co (entre 0,1 e 0,5 mg Co/kg de MS), no entanto os solos alcalinos limitam a absorção do mineral pelas plantas. Estudos indicam que a adição de Co na ordem de 0,25 a 0,35 mg/kg de MS aumentam a digestão de forragem de baixa qualidade e aumenta a população de bactérias anaeróbias no rúmen em até 50%. Dietas de grãos exigem mais Co do que dietas à base de forragem, e o Co deve sempre ser incluído na mistura mineral ao alimentar os animais com dietas à base de grãos. As principais fontes de suplementação de Co para os bovinos é o sulfato (25% Co) e o óxido (72% Co). b) Cobre (Cu) O cobre é um dos elementos com maior incidência de deficiência micromineral dos bovinos. O Cu é um componente importante de muitos sistemas enzimáticos essenciais para o crescimento e desenvolvimento do animal. Suas funções estão relacionadas com o crescimento adequado, o correto funcionamento dos glóbulos vermelhos já que libera ferro pela ação da ceruloplasmina, formação de colágeno, produção de melanina, a reprodução e a imunidade. Em conjunto com o Mo e o S faz parte de sistemas enzimáticos envolvidos com o metabolismo de vitaminas e nucleotídeos. No entanto, pela relação de antagonismo, esses dois elementos podem diminuir o grau de absorção de Cu no organismo, logo para os animais mantidos a pasto é ideal manter o balance entre o Cu e Mo entre 2:1 e 4:1. A quantidade de Cu absorvível é menor nas forragens do que em silagens e fenos. Os bovinos de corte exigem 10 mg/kg/dieta de Cu diariamente, caso não atendida essas exigências a deficiência e complicações começam a aparecer precocemente. Os sinais de deficiência incluem fertilidade reduzida, anestro pós-parto, retardo da puberdade, diminuição das taxas de concepção, diminuição da libido, diminuição do processo de espermatogênese em touros, baixa imunidade e, com isso, aumento da susceptibilidade a doenças, além da pigmentação reduzida da pelagem (pelo preto muda para vermelho), e anemia já que o Cu está relacionado com a transformação do Fe para ser utilizado pelo organismo. Deficiências alimentares podem ocorrer, como no caso as gramíneas do gênero Brachiaria que possuem baixa concentração do mineral, mas a maioria das deficiências é causada pelo consumo de antagonistas, o que reduz a absorção de Cu. Uma vez que o elemento atua em conjunto com outros minerais como Fe, Mo, S, Se e Zn, pode ser apresentada uma deficiência caso esses minerais estejam em excesso, logo não podem superar os seguintes valores: > 0,4% para o S, > 500 ppm para o Zn, > 400 ppm para o Fe e > 150 ppm para o Mo, uma vez que afetam a absorção do Cu no intestino. Deve-se dar ênfase que em bovinos a carência deste elemento pode causar mortes súbitas em animais gordos em virtude da fibrose do miocárdio. De todos os minerais o Cu é o que apresenta maior risco de intoxicação. A intoxicação por Cu é comum em bovinos, uma vez que são sensíveis. O nível máximo que os bovinos suportam é de 40 mg/kg. Caso haja excesso na dieta produz-se hemólise, icterícia, metahemoglobinemia, necrose e morte. O Cu deve ser suplementado como sulfato de cobre (25% Cu), cloreto de cobre tribásico (TBCC) ou uma forma orgânica complexa, já que o óxido de cobre é muito mal absorvido. Também podem ser utilizados o carbonato (51%) ou o hidróxido (63%). A adubação da pastagem também pode ser uma forma, porém não há garantias de absorção pela planta. c) Iodo (I) O iodo é um mineral essencial para a função dos hormônios da tireoide (T3 e T4) que regulam o metabolismo energético e é importante para a manutenção da taxa metabólica. Os bovinos de corte exigem uma quantidade de 0,5 mg/kg de dieta diariamente deste mineral. A incorporação do I na dieta animal é de 0,4 mg/kg para bezerros e de 1,3 g/dia para novilhas não prenhes. No último terço da gestação as vacas exigem cerca de 1,5 g/dia, enquanto vacas em lactação de 4 a 4,5 g/dia. Quando essas exigências não são atendidas, a deficiência produz aumento no tamanho da tireoide, diminuição da taxa metabólica, retardamento do crescimento, baixo peso ao desmame, aumento da susceptibilidade a doenças, problemas podais, além dos problemas e falhas reprodutivas. As vacas que apresentam deficiência de I apresentam retenção de placenta e os bezerros podem nascer cegos, prematuros, sem pelos ou até mesmo mortos. A intoxicação não é comum e quando ocorre deve-se a possíveis erros na formulação da dieta. Produz-se então o aumento da secreção nasal e ocular, além da salivação sinais apresentados em bezerros com uso prolongado o I orgânico. Já os sintomas posteriores se resumem no aumento da taxa metabólica, diminuição da ingestão de alimentos, baixa imunidade e problemas na fertilidade. Os bovinos toleram um nível máximo de 50 mg/kg de ração. Com a eliminação do excesso os animais tendem a se recuperar precocemente. O I raramente é deficiente em determinados rebanhos de vacas. É geralmente suplementado como di-hidroiodeto de etilenodiamina (EDDI). A suplementação legal máxima de EDDI é de 50 mg/cabeça/dia. Em alguns casos, o EDDI foi incluído em dietas para evitar a podridão dos cascos; no entanto, a quantidade de EDDI necessária para evitar a podridão dos cascos é muito maior do que os requisitos e provavelmente não vai evitar a podridão dos cascos quando incluído no máximo legal. Porém as fontes mais comuns de suplementação prática são o iodato de cálcio e o iodato de potássio com 60% de I. A concentração de I nas forragens varia bastante, entre 0,01 mg/kg até a 1 mg/kg, e depende do solo em que estão cultivadas. d) Ferro (Fe) O ferro é principalmente necessário para a formação da hemoglobina (0,355%) molécula encarregada do transporte de O2 e CO2 no organismo; também é componente da mioglobina e de enzimas que auxiliam na respiração celular; além disso faz parte de componentes que transportam o elemento pelo organismo e que depositam o mineral nos tecidos. Os requerimentos de Fe são baixos, bovinos exigem a presença de 50 mg do mineral por kg de dieta diária. A eficiência de absorção do elemento é maior em animais jovens (bezerros (as) e novilhos (as)) possuindo um coeficiente de 60%, no entanto a eficiência de absorção cai para 2% em animais adultos. Os animais jovens podem estar susceptíveis a deficiência uma vez que a dieta é fundamentalmente láctea e que o leite da vaca possui uma baixa presença do mineral em sua composição (37 mg/l). Os bezerros são mais susceptíveis a deficiência de Fe, já que o leite é pobre no mineral. Quando há a carência os sintomas incluem anemia, imunidade baixa, aumento na presença de doenças, diminuição do consumo de alimentos, baixo índice de crescimento e diminuição do ganho de peso e, em casos graves, a morte. A deficiência de Fe é raramente observada em bovinos alimentados com volumosos já que diversos solos possuem o mineral disponível em níveis adequados para a absorção pelas plantas. As plantas forrageiras dos trópicos oferecem níveis elevados do mineral em sua composição, na ordem de 80 a 300 ppm/kg de MS. A intoxicação por Fe é difícil de acontecer, entretanto a quantidade máxima permitida para bovinos é de 500 mg/kg de dieta. A intoxicação está associada com um baixo consumo de alimentos, diminuição do ganho de peso e na eficiência alimentar, diarreia, hipotermia e morte em casos graves. As bactérias ruminais utilizam o Fe livre para seu crescimento, portanto um excesso do elemento aumenta a susceptibilidade a problemas como a acidose metabólica. Alimentos ricos em Fe geralmente são os de origem animal. As sementes de leguminosas são mais ricas do que as forragens frescas. O óxido de ferro (70%) é frequentemente incluído em misturas minerais, mas não está disponível para o animal já que não é absorvível, servindo apenas como um agente corante para dar ao mineral uma cor vermelha escura. O sulfato de ferro (20%) está disponível para o animal e deve ser usado se a suplementação com Fe for necessária. Outras fontes de suplementação são o carbonato ferroso (42%), cloreto férrico (21%) e o fosfato de ferro (28%). e) Manganês (Mn) O manganês é necessário para a reprodução, desenvolvimento fetal e do úbere. À medida que a concentração na dieta aumenta, a concentração do mineral é incrementada nos tecidos reprodutivos, sugerindo uma relação direta entre o Mn e a fertilidade. Está relacionado com várias funções dentre as quais estão a ativação e constituição de diversas enzimas, metabolismo de lipídeos e carboidratos e o crescimento ósseo. Os requerimentos variam de acordo com o estado fisiológico e de produção. Por exemplo, a exigência para bovinos de corte varia entre 20 e 40 mg/kg de dieta. Animais em crescimento e ganho requerem 20 mg/kg na dieta, enquanto vacas gestantes e em lactação exigem 40 mg/kg na dieta. O leite da vaca contém 0,03 mg/kg ou por litro, o que faz com que os animais jovens ou recém-nascidos possam apresentar deficiência desse mineral. A deficiência de Mn é rara e pouco provável que seja um problema para os bovinos à pasto no Brasil. A carência causa alteração no crescimento, anormalidades do esqueleto e das articulações, encurtamento dos tendões em recém-nascidos, baixo peso ao nascimento e alterações reprodutivas como degeneração testicular, esterilidade, anestro, cios silenciosos, falta de cio e abortos. A intoxicação por Mn é difícil de ocorrer, uma vez que os níveis máximos são elevados para bovinos sendo 2 g/kg na dieta. Entretanto, o Mn atua com outros minerais que podem afetar seu limite total. As pastagens do Brasil possuem níveis acima das exigências dos animais, uma vez que há disponibilidade do elemento no solo, entretanto há algumas áreas deficientes. Os pastos do gênero Brachiaria possuem níveis adequados de Mn (120 e 400 ppm/kg de MS). O óxido de manganês e o sulfato de manganês (27%) são a forma mais comum desse mineral usado em misturas minerais com um coeficiente de absorção de 0,75%. As dietas à base de milho possuem baixas concentrações de Mn e a suplementação faz-se necessário caso haja alimentação com essas dietas. Em dietas com alto excesso de Ca e P inibe-se a absorção e aumenta-se a excreção do elemento nas fezes. Em bezerros, o alto excesso de Fe também diminui a absorção de Mn. f) Selênio (Se) Por muito tempo esse mineral foi taxado de tóxico aos animais, no entanto a partir do século XX é que se descobriu a essencialidade deste elemento nas funções antioxidantes, no metabolismo de lipídeos, no processo de imunidade e na síntese de hormônios da tireoide. O selênio é um mineral relativamente deficiente em algumas áreas do Brasil. Os bovinos requerem em média 0,1 mg/kg na dieta, tolerando até o nível máximo de 5 mg/kg na dieta. A deficiência de Se causa doença do músculo branco (semelhante à distrofia muscular) em bezerros recém-nascidos, também pode fazer com que os bezerros sejam fracos ao nascer e aumentar sua suscetibilidade a doenças de calefação como os batedores, além de aumentar a taxa de mortalidade pré-desmame. Taxas aumentadas de placentas retidas e desempenho reprodutivo ruim são frequentemente observadas em vacas com deficiências desse mineral. A intoxicação por Se não é rara, porém níveis superiores a 5 mg/kg tornam-se tóxicos aos bovinos. A intoxicação pode ser crônica apresentando baixa vitalidade, pelos ásperos, perda de apetite, crescimento do casco e anemia; ou aguda apresentando cegueira, salivação e paralisia. Há plantas que acumulam Se a ponto de ocasionar intoxicação aguda no animal, essa maior concentração está relacionada com a presença do mineral no solo. Geralmente, solos ácidos (pH < 6) são pobres neste elemento, em contrapartida, solos alcalinos (pH > 8) são ricos em Se. As folhas das plantas apresentam de 1,5 a 2 vezes mais Se que os talos; e as sementes possuem uma concentração alta. Muitos subprodutos da agroindústria, com exceção dos derivados do leite, possuem uma alta concentração de Se. A farinha de pescado possui, em média, mais de 1 mg de Se/kg de MS, porém sua eficiência de absorção é baixa. Plantas forrageiras possuem um coeficiente de absorção de 31% e os concentrados possuem uma eficiência de 61% de absorção pelo animal. A suplementação com esse mineral aumenta seu teor no leite da vaca que é de 0,01 a 0,025 mg/kg ou por litro, o que é benéfico ao animal jovem. A FDA (fibra em detergente ácido) permite que o selênio seja usado em um nível não superior a 0,3 ppm (ou até 0,10 mg/kg) da matéria seca na dieta total de bovinos de corte. Nas zonas em que ocorrem deficiências, o ideal é a administração do nível legal máximo. A FDA permite que até 120 ppm sejam incluídos em uma mistura sal-mineral para alimentação de escolha livre. O Se é geralmente adicionado a misturas minerais na forma de selenito de sódio (45%), mas há as formas orgânicas do elemento como o selênio levedura e o selênio metionina ambos com teores variando entre 1000 e 2000 mg de Se/kg de produto. O selênio é muito tóxico e deve ser usado apenas na forma pré-misturada. A deficiência de Se não deve ser um problema se as quantidades adequadas de Se são balanceadas no suplemento mineral. No entanto, a concentração de Se no suplemento e na ingestão rotulada não deve resultar numa ingestão total superior a 3 mg por dia. Assim, um mineral marcado para a ingestão de 0,10 gramas por cabeça por dia não pode exceder 26 ppm de Se. O Se pode ser suplementado na ração, na mistura mineral, na forma de pellets ou mesmo injetável. g) Zinco (Zn) Este elemento pode ser encontrado nos ossos, sangue e nos pelos. O Zn é um elemento que possui funções catalíticas, estruturais e regulatórias. É um importante componente de sistemas enzimáticos que afetam o metabolismo de lipídeos, proteínas, glicose, hormônios da tireoide e ácidos nucleicos. Também é de suma importância para a espermatogênese e o desenvolvimento dos órgãos sexuais primários e secundários no macho e para uma resposta imune adequada e a calcificação dos ossos. Além disso, é fundamental para a saúde da pele e dos cascos. Os Bovinos de corte exigem 30 mg de Zn/kg na dieta, tolerando níveis de até 500 mg/kg/ração. Os depósitos deste elemento são baixos no organismo. A utilização de formas orgânicas como o zinco metionina melhoram o ganho de peso de bovinos à pasto. Quando as exigências não são atendidas a deficiência pode produzir crescimento retardado, perda de apetite, baixa eficiência alimentar, alopecia, lesões podais e na pele, baixa taxa de concepção, aumento de distocias, alteração do estro e na resposta imunológica e, nos machos, retardamento da puberdade e diminuição dos testículos e da libido. Quando é fornecido níveis superiores ao máximo legal há intoxicação, porém é de difícil manifestação e os sintomas se reduzem a recusa na ingestão de alimentos, fraqueza e anemia. O zinco é um elemento de marginal a deficiente na maioria das forragens brasileiras. O gado tem uma capacidade limitada para armazenar Zn e a suplementação é sempre necessária. A absorção de Zn é de 15% e está intimamente ligada à absorção de cobre, e a relação zinco-cobre deve ser mantida em aproximadamente 3:1. Além disso, altos níveis de ferro podem diminuir a absorção de zinco. A absorção do Zn diminui uma vez que a proporção de ferro para zinco excede 2:1. Altas concentrações de Ca na dieta diminuem a absorção e aumentam os requerimentos de Zn. Algumas forragens possuem boa disponibilidade de Zn o que é essencial para a metionina, quando isso não acontece, faz-se necessário a suplementação com Zn tanto para o funcionalismo enzimático quanto para a saúde dos cascos e, assim, melhorar os ganhos diários e a eficiência alimentar. Nas forragens, o nível de Zn é relativamente baixo (20 ppm), enquanto os grãos de cereais possuem em média 35 ppm. Deve-se suplementar os bovinos em pastejo e sob condições de estresse. As fontes proteicas são ricas em Zn enquanto as energéticas são pobres. Para a suplementação prática, a forma orgânica tem apresentado melhores resultados, dentre as inorgânicas tanto o sulfato (22 a 30%) quanto o óxido (70 a 80%) possuem boa disponibilidade, sendo o óxido o mais recomendável e utilizado. h) Molibdênio (Mo) O Mo é um mineral exigido em doses pequenas, porém essencial. Frequentemente estuda-se este mineral juntamente com o Cu, uma vez que este interfere na absorção do mesmo. É um importante componente e atuante em enzimas que afetam o metabolismo de purinas, pirimidinas e niacinas. Além disso, é constituinte de enzimas do leite e dos tecidos. Como é um mineral exigido em doses pequenas, a deficiência é difícil de ocorrer. Os sintomas de deficiência são análogos aos do Cu, podendo haver anemia e crescimento retardado em função da dificuldade de utilização do Fe. A intoxicação é comum em animais criados à pasto sob um solo com pH elevado. Como a maioria dos solos do Brasil são ácidos é pouco comum a intoxicação, entretanto podem acontecer tendo como principais sintomas os mesmos da deficiência de Cu, podendo haver ainda anemia, diarreia e diminuição da espermatogênese. Os bovinos toleram um nível máximo de 5 mg de Mo/kg/dieta. A absorção de Mo é melhorada com suplementação de Cu, da mesma forma, já que Mo e Cu são antagonistas, uma das formas de minimizar a intoxicação por Mo é o fornecimento de Cu. Geralmente os alimentos possuem níveis acima das exigências dos animais, porém em concentrações não tóxicas. As principais fontes de suplementação são o molibdato de sódio (40%) e molibdato de amônio (54%). i) Níquel (Ni) Apesar de ser um mineral considerado essencial, sua função principal não é bem definida, sabe-se que participa da ativação de enzimas sobre o metabolismo proteico e energético, e importante para as bactérias por participar das hidrogenases e urease. A absorção é relativamente baixa variando entre 1 e 5%. Possui interações com o Fe, Zn, Ca e Mg. A falta de Ni pode prejudicar a absorção de Fe, por outro lado, concentrações grandes de Fe prejudicam a absorção de Ni. Se houver falta de Ni o nível de Zn no organismo animal poderá diminuir. No que se refere a deficiência, devido a concentração adequada do mineral nos alimentos a carência em condições normais é de difícil acontecimento. As exigências para os bovinos são pequenas, é recomendável uma dieta que contenha 0,3 ppm de Ni. A intoxicação por Ni é quase ou sempre rara, uma vez que para que haja sintomas de intoxicação será preciso a presença de Ni em 3000 vezes a exigência, isto é, os bovinos toleram o elemento em até 1000 mg/kg de ração. A principal fonte de suplementação é o cloreto de níquel hexahidratado (50%). Os alimentos geralmente possuem níveis adequados do elemento, exceto os energéticos que são ricos em amido e pobres em minerais. As pastagens possuem até 3,5 mg de Ni/kg de MS e os concentrados proteicos como o farelo de soja e o de girassol possuem até 8 mg de Ni/kg de MS, ou seja, possuem teores maiores que as exigências dos animais sendo as melhores fontes para sua suplementação natural. A tabela 1 descreve as principais funções dos macros e microminerais e as principais fontes para os bovinos de corte criados no sistema de pastejo. MINERAIS TÓXICOS Alguns minerais são considerados tóxicos para os bovinos mesmo em dosagens muito pequenas. Todavia, alguns ainda podem ser considerados essenciais, mas em dosagens recomendadas por especialistas. a) Arsênio (As) É um elemento considerado tóxico e inibidor de vários sistemas enzimáticos. É encontrado em inseticidas e pesticidas, logo o manejo de aplicação de produtos nas pastagens pode ser crucial para a intoxicação dos animais. As plantas absorvem pouco ou quase nada desse mineral através do solo. O nível máximo desse elemento deve ser de 30 mg/kg/ração. Já as exigências situam-se entre 25 e 50 µg/kg, bem abaixo dos níveis que se encontram nos alimentos. b) Cádmio (Cd) Esse elemento pode ser encontrado em plantas e nos tecidos dos animais. As plantas, por sua vez, refletem o nível do elemento presente no solo. Os fertilizantes e os fosfatos utilizados na nutrição animal podem conter níveis preocupantes em sua composição. Experimentos com esse mineral indicaram problemas no crescimento e na reprodução. Em dietas normais, o nível desse elemento é maior que as indicações. Como é de difícil excreção, este elemento tende a acumular-se no organismo ocasionando danos hepáticos e destruição do epitélio intestinal além de diminuir o desempenho produtivo do animal. O nível máximo deve ser de 10 mg/kg/ração. c) Chumbo (Pb) O Pb pode ser preocupante em pastagens próximas a rodovias. As fontes de elementos minerais como a de manganês podem conter altos níveis de chumbo. Os principais efeitos deste elemento são tóxicos e estão associados a diminuição da ingestão de alimentos e da imunidade, efeitos neurológicos, cólicas e anemia. A recomendação máxima deve respeitar uma concentração de até 100 mg/kg/ração. d) Flúor (F) Na prática, o F é o elemento tóxico de maior importância, uma vez que em quantidades pequenas (1 mg/kg/dieta) pode aumentar a resistência dos dentes ou ainda destruir os microrganismos que atacam o mesmo, já em quantidades maiores pode atacar e destruir os dentes. Apesar de estimular a enzima piruvato quinase, ele é um potente inibidor de vários sistemas enzimáticos. Já que o F possui uma relação direta com o P, uma forma prática de evitar a intoxicação é manter uma relação de 60:1 entre ambos. O nível máximo tolerável para os bovinos é de 40 mg/kg/dieta. e) Mercúrio (Hg) É um mineral tóxico sem precedentes. Pode ser encontrado naturalmente no solo, mas também através da ação do homem e em produtos da agricultura como fungicidas. A recomendação máxima de Hg é de 2 mg/kg/dieta. As fontes de Hg são a água e alimentos contaminados. Em decorrência de água contaminada, a farinha de peixe e pescados podem conter níveis elevados. 3. MINERAIS PRESENTES NAS GRAMÍNEAS As gramíneas brasileiras possuem boa disponibilidade de macro e microminerais em sua composição bromatológica (tabela 2). No entanto, segundo a literatura, nos trópicos há uma deficiência ou toxidez natural de alguns minerais essenciais para os bovinos, como o Ca, P, Co, Mn, Se e Zn, sendo os principais minerais que apresentam essas características benéficas ou desvantajosas no Brasil (Adaptação de McDowell, 1999). Com isso, faz-se necessário a suplementação em épocas de deficiência, ou a atenção imediata aos níveis tóxicos em épocas de maior disponibilidade desses minerais. Na época das chuvas em demasia, o solo fica com um pH baixo, derivado do excesso de Al no solo, uma forma de aumentar o pH tornando-o mais neutro possível e de diminuir a presença do Al tóxico aos animais é a calagem com calcário. Os solos do Brasil possuem características particulares conforme cada região, no entanto, é fácil afirmar que o país possui uma deficiência natural de elementos essenciais como o P. Uma das formas mais econômicas para aumentar a concentração de minerais de gramíneas e forrageiras é a adubação do solo onde são cultivadas. No entanto, para o P a forma mais eficiente e econômica é o fornecimento do mesmo no cocho. Adubar o solo para muitos pode ser desperdício de dinheiro, no entanto, a afirmação é errada. As características bromatológicas de gramíneas, forrageiras e leguminosas podem ser alteradas com a simples administração de minerais ou de adubos orgânicos ao solo. Com a adubação do solo, com nitrogênio por exemplo, para o melhor desempenho e composição química das plantas forrageiras, pode influenciar também no consumo de alimentos por animal, na massa seca, taxa de lotação e no ganho de peso diário (figura 2). Um estudo realizado no Quênia com 58 gramíneas cultivadas em solos com as mesmas características dos solos brasileiros, revelaram as seguintes variações na concentração de minerais em kg de MS: cinzas 4% ou 12,2%; Ca 0,09 a 0,55%; P 0,05 a 0,37%. Essa concentração mineral depende da interação de vários fatores, dentre os quais estão o solo, a espécie forrageira, o estado de maturidade, o rendimento, o manejo das pastagens e o clima. Geralmente, as plantas herbáceas e leguminosas possuem uma maior concentração tanto de minerais quanto de outros nutrientes essenciais. Deve-se enfatizar que a idade da planta influencia em sua composição mineral (tabela 3), uma vez que ocorre o processo de diluição e da translocação dos minerais para o sistema radicular da planta. As principais espécies de gramíneas do Brasil são a Brachiaria decumbens, Panicum maximum e Pennisetum purpureum com as seguintes características minerais. FATORES QUE AFETAM A INGESTÃO DE MINERAIS Controlar a ingestão de minerais no nível desejado é uma tarefa difícil uma vez que a ingestão flutua. Deve-se, então, monitorar a ingestão dos minerais por muitas semanas para antes da implementação de um manejo que altere a ingestão dos mesmos. Se a ingestão for muito alta ou baixa, deve-se mover o cocho de suplementação para mais perto ou mais longe da fonte de água em várias áreas da pastagem. Quando o gado está consumindo o suplemento em excesso o sal é muitas vezes adicionado para reduzir a quantidade de minerais que o gado ingere. O nível de sal possui um impacto significativo sobre a ingestão de minerais e é facilmente alterado para o controle da quantidade de suplemento que o animal ingere; no entanto, deve-se levar em consideração a adição do sal ao se determinar a correta ingestão diária. Por exemplo, se um suplemento mineral possuir uma recomendação de taxa de alimentação de 113 g/dia é misturado em uma proporção de 50:50 com sal branco, então o gado deve consumir 226 g/dia desse suplemento. Isso forneceria para o animal a quantidade inicial de 113 g/dia do mineral mais 113 g/dia de sal adicionado. Quando o consumo é insuficiente, deve-se mudar para um suplemento mais seco, melado ou alterar a marcas para um mineral mais palatável ao gado. Além disso, deve-se ter em mente que os bezerros podem consumir quantidades significativas de minerais e isso deve ser considerado antes da diminuição do nível de alimentação, isto é, diminuição do consumo de MS/dia. Se a ingestão de minerais for inadequada, deve-se adicionar um alimento mais palatável a mistura, com uma característica de sabor ao animal. Alimentos como o farelo de algodão, farelo de soja, melaço e grãos de destilaria melhoram a palatabilidade e a ingestão dos suplementos. A ingestão do suplemento pode melhorar quando o cocho estiver perto da fonte de água ou quando se troca a marca do suplemento escolhendo um com mais palatabilidade. Monitorar regularmente o consumo de minerais para manter um registro do número de animais e das quantidades de consumo é importante para combater a ingestão em potencial ou deficiente do suplemento evitando possíveis problemas de deficiência e/ou intoxicação. 4.1 Alimentadores minerais A colocação do alimentador (cocho) é uma parte importante do fornecimento de minerais para o rebanho. Deve certificar-se que exista um número adequado de cochos para a taxa de lotação existente na pastagem. Uma forma prática é a existência de um cocho para cada 30 ou 50 animais. As melhores áreas para a localização dos cochos são perto das fontes de água, em lugares sombreados e perto das melhores áreas de pastagem. Deve-se verificar os cochos pelo menos uma vez por semana para mantê-los limpos para o fornecimento de um suplemento fresco em todos os momentos. Um bom alimentador deve manter o suplemento seco, ser portátil e resistir aos animais e corrosão. Os cochos abertos não são indicados. Os cochos metálicos não são indicados, sendo os de madeira, fibra de vidro ou de plástico os mais indicados e de longa duração. Os cochos permanentes feitos de concreto funcionam bem, mas a portabilidade é um problema. No caso de suplementos minerais, com consumo médio diário de 50 a 150 g/cabeça, deve-se ter 4 cm linear de cocho/UA isso para um cocho de 30 cm de profundidade, 40 cm de largura no topo e 30 cm de largura no fundo, pois essas dimensões permitem acesso dos dois lados do cocho e diminuem embates entre os animais. 4.2 Forma do suplemento Os minerais soltos em uma mistura para livre escolha é uma forma desejável e recomendável para vacas reprodutoras e/ou com crias. Para os animais com dietas completas, o suplemento é mais otimizado e uma forma de fornecimento é em uma mistura TMR, sigla em inglês para ração totalmente misturada. Ao suplementar com um produto em forma de bloco (figura 1), os microminerais devem ser superiores aos que estão contidos em uma mistura solta, uma vez que o animal consome de 28 a 56 g/dia. Além disso, alguns blocos contêm apenas vestígios de sal mineralizado, que acaba não suprindo as necessidades de macrominerais dos animais, como o Ca e o P. Deve-se ler o rótulo do produto cuidadosamente para certificar-se de que o mesmo contém todos os minerais necessários ao animal. Esse tipo de produto em bloco é utilizado para suplementar os animais que não tiveram acesso aos minerais por um longo período. Desta forma, o animal consumirá mais minerais sob a forma solta caso seja concedido o acesso de livre escolha. Esses blocos são utilizados na finalidade de fornecer os requerimentos minerais dos animais em um curto período evitando o consumo excessivo. Não deverá ser fornecido sal branco puro e um dado mineral separadamente, uma vez que a ingestão desse elemento será muito baixa já que o animal desejará apenas o sal. Os suplementos comerciais proteicos e energéticos às vezes são fortificados com minerais. Esses suplementos vêm nas formas de rações peletizadas, melaço líquido, blocos à base de melaço líquido, duro ou prensado ou ainda na forma de blocos à base de grãos. Não é necessário o fornecimento de um suplemento mineral de livre escolha junto com o suplemento comercial proteico ou energético. 4.3 Estação A ingestão de minerais geralmente é maior quando a forragem está com boa disponibilidade e diminui durante o outono ou períodos de seca. A composição mineral da forragem diminui conforme a maturidade da planta (idade). As forragens maduras são consumidas em menores quantidades através da seletividade dos animais, o que reduz ainda mais a ingestão de minerais. Em contrapartida, forrageiras em crescimento possuem melhor capacidade mineral do que as maduras. Além disso, o conteúdo mineral é maior em forrageiras cultivadas em solos com maior fertilidade ou solos adubados química ou organicamente. As plantas geralmente são mais fertilizadas e digestíveis durante a primavera; ou como no Brasil só possuímos duas estações bem definidas, a época dos dois meses antes da transição do período chuvoso para o primeiro mês do período seco demonstra melhor carga mineral para a planta; isso leva a uma maior ingestão natural de minerais através da disponibilidade da pastagem e redução do consumo de suplementos durante essa época do ano. 4.4 Método de suplementação ou alimentação Os animais jovens às vezes são alimentados com uma ração baseada em grãos ou silagem misturada na propriedade. A mistura completa de minerais em rações mistas é difícil; apenas uma pequena quantidade de minerais é necessária e se separa facilmente do maior tamanho das partículas de grãos e forragens. Logo, é mais recomendável usar um suplemento mineral que possua maior taxa de disponibilidade e alimentação, seja incluso na ração, separadamente no cocho para livre escolha ou em outras formas de fornecimento como água ou injetável. Um trabalho foi realizado para comparar a suplementação de um suplemento mineral de livre escolha ou misturar os minerais na ração todos os dias. O mineral continha um ionóforo (Bovatec®). Os resultados do trabalho, no qual as novilhas foram alimentadas com feno de milho, silagem de milho e minerais em um cocho de livre escolha ou onde os minerais foram cobertos (113 g/dia) na alimentação cada dia estão presentes na tabela 4. Tanto a suplementação coberta na ração quanto a de livre escolha apresentaram resultados de ganho diário semelhantes. As novilhas com livre escolha de ingestão do suplemento consumiram cerca de 14 g/cabeça/dia muito menos que o desejado de 113 gramas diárias por animal, mas estavam dentro da faixa necessária para a eficácia do ionóforo. Se quantidades específicas de um mineral ou aditivo alimentar particular são necessárias por dia, é desejável o uso de top-dress ou misturar o mineral na ração todos os dias ao invés de permitir o consumo de livre escolha. Ao oferecer o suplemento para livre escolha dos animais é necessária a monitoração do consumo para obter a certeza de que a ingestão diária é adequada. Esse controle servirá para que se possa inserir aditivos como um ionóforo ou antibiótico para aumentar a eficácia dos minerais no animal. BIODISPONIBILIDADE DOS MINERAIS O tipo de minerais na dieta pode afetar a eficiência de produção e a relação custo-benefício da suplementação. Quando se adquire um sal mineralizado é importante ter em conta a concentração dos minerais e sua biodisponibilidade (tabela 5). A biodisponibilidade de sulfatos e cloretos é maior que a biodisponibilidade dos óxidos. Uma exceção é o óxido de magnésio, que é absorvido o suficiente para ser usado na suplementação dos bovinos de corte. No entanto, deve-se evitar o uso de óxido de cobre, uma vez que é quase ou nada absorvível. O óxido de ferro também é mal absorvido e geralmente é usado para adicionar cor à mistura mineral. Por causa da boa disponibilidade do Fe nas forragens e alimentos no Brasil, o gado raramente requer uma suplementação do elemento, logo a adição do mineral não deverá afetar o desempenho dos animais e pode ser benéfico, uma vez que o Fe pode interagir com outros minerais e impedir sua absorção como citado supra. Os minerais geralmente são incluídos em suplementos na forma inorgânica, mas também podem ser combinados com um aminoácido ou proteína, formando um composto orgânico (referido como complexos proteinados ou quelados). Os suplementos que utilizam a forma orgânica incluem os que fornecem os minerais Cu, Zn, Co e Mn juntamente a um aminoácido, geralmente a metionina, ou proteína. A biodisponibilidade relativa de Cu, Mn e Zn de diferentes fontes é maior em comparação com fontes inorgânicas, conforme descrito na tabela 5. Os minerais orgânicos custam mais do que os inorgânicos; portanto, um aumento no desempenho deve ser realizado para compensar o mais caro. A resposta das fontes orgânicas é variável e são recomendados em determinadas situações. As fontes orgânicas foram eficazes no aumento da eficiência reprodutiva de novilhas sob condições de estresse nutricional, ou ainda na redução da morbilidade e mortalidade de animais recém-desmamados que são altamente susceptíveis à doença respiratória bovina. Para vacas, o fornecimento de fontes orgânicas de minerais é utilizado nos dois últimos meses antes do parto; já para bezerros esse tipo de suplementação é recomendado apenas durante o período de desmame. No entanto, a metionina de zinco pode ser fornecida continuamente durante o período de alimentação visando a diminuição de problemas podais. IDENTIFICANDO UMA DEFICIÊNCIA MINERAL A deficiência mineral em bovinos de corte é difícil de se estimar e de diagnosticar e, silenciosamente, pode ocasionar grandes prejuízos à saúde do animal e ao financeiro. A maioria das deficiências estão relacionadas com o Ca, P e S, mas também com o Zn, Cu e Se. As deficiências minerais são classificadas em primárias e secundárias, de acordo com o grau de manifestação. A deficiência primária ocorre quando o animal ingere forragens que são deficientes em um determinado elemento como o Mg, ou ainda quando não é fornecido a suplementação adequada com sal mineralizado, o que se torna a causa mais comum desse grau de deficiência. Esse tipo de deficiência raramente ocorre em rebanhos bem manejados e que possuem alimentos como forrageiras de boa qualidade nutricional e que são suplementados adequadamente e na época ideal. Essas falhas são mais fáceis de resolver. Por sua vez, a deficiência secundária ocorre quando o animal consome um excesso de minerais antagonistas de outros elementos, que interferem na absorção normal ou no metabolismo um do outro. INTRODUÇÃO A técnica da inseminação artificial tornou possível aumentar o impacto na descendência de touros geneticamente superiores em termos de produção láctea das filhas. Com a transferência de embriões é possível aumentar o impacto da fêmea sobre (...) a população das filhas. A transferência de embriões data de 1890, ano em que Heape obteve o nascimento de coelhos transferindo ovócitos fecundados de uma fêmea para outra. A partir de 1930, é repetida uma série de experiências para desenvolver a técnica e aplicá-la em ovinos, caprinos (1934) e bovinos (1951) como espécies mais idôneas para a reprodução. A Inglaterra e os Estados Unidos estabeleceram as bases para o comércio de embriões durante os anos sessenta e setenta. De forma resumida, a transferência de embriões implica na estimulação da produção de ovócitos mediante a aplicação de hormônios: cerca de 6-8 dias após a cobrição dessas fêmeas ou da sua inseminação artificial, os óvulos fertilizados são extraídos dos órgãos genitais da fêmea doadora por perfusão ou lavagem com soluções biológicas controladas e testadas, originando-se uma deposição dos gametas fecundados nas fêmeas receptoras que serão encarregadas de levar adiante a gestação e o parto sem influência sobre as produções do novo indivíduo. 2. MANEJO DAS FÊMEAS DOADORAS É relativamente fácil obter um embrião, uma vez que pode origina-se a partir do cio natural das vacas cíclicas. No entanto, a fim de otimizar a técnica, o normal é «superovular» a fêmea doadora e obter um número superior de gametas fecundadas após cada lavagem ou perfusão das genitais. A maioria das fêmeas doadoras são tratadas com gonadotrofinas (PMSG) ou com hormônios estimuladores da foliculogênese (FSH). Estes hormônios invertem a atresia normal de folículos permitindo uma maturação, que em condições normais não se realizaria. O mecanismo exato do funcionamento destas hormonas não é totalmente claro. A superovulação multiplica por um fator de 10 o número de ovócitos recuperados no caso das vacas, ovelhas e cabras, mas apenas por um fator 2 ou 3 no caso das porcas. Existe um acordo geral sobre a utilização das gonadotrofinas; a PMSG deve ser aplicada durante a transição da fase luteica para a folicular, ou seja, no 16º dia do ciclo. As doses de gonadotrofinas variam entre 1500 e 3000 UI em bovinos, aumentando a resposta e a variabilidade individual com o aumento da dose. A resposta ao tratamento varia de acordo em função de diversos fatores. Neste contexto, merecem especial atenção a espécie, a raça, a época e a conformação corporal do animal, bem como o lote de fabricação da preparação hormonal (quadro 7.1). Estudos demonstram que, nos bovinos, as raças de corte respondem melhor ao tratamento do que as raças leiteiras. O FSH também é utilizado para superovulação em várias espécies. Nos ovinos, injetam-se 2 mg desta hormona 12 horas antes da retirada das esponjas, aplicando-se mais três injeções, com um intervalo de 12 horas, até 24 horas após a retirada das esponjas, o que corresponde a um total de 8 mg de FSH injetados por tratamento e animal. Às vezes, e dependendo do país, existem dificuldades para a obtenção desse hormônio em condições de pureza adequada para que o tratamento proporcione o resultado esperado. Nas vacas dadoras devem ter passado mais de 50 dias após o último parto: também ser animais cíclicos, encontrar-se num nível nutricional elevado e em aumento, sem deficiências especificas alimentares. Existe uma indicação de suplementação das fêmeas doadoras com minerais essenciais antes do tratamento. 3. OBTENÇÃO DE EMBRIÕES Uma vez as fêmeas doadoras inseminadas, entre o sexto e o oitavo dia, procede-se a coleta dos embriões. Para isso, atualmente se utilizam cateteres de obtenção transcervical (tipo Foley, Rusch. etc.) munidos de uma bola insuflável na sua extremidade que permite criar um compartimento estanque na parte distal do córneo uterino e proceder ao arrasto dos embriões ali localizados. Para obter esta «lavagem» utiliza-se uma solução aquosa tamponada: o meio mais frequentemente utilizado é o tampão fosfato salino (PBS: pH = 7; PO = 280 - 290 mOsm/kg) suplementado com antibióticos e proteínas. Depois de recuperado o meio de lavagem, os embriões devem ser isolados do volume total, avaliados segundo critérios do Manual da Sociedade Internacional de Transferência de Embriões de acordo com seu estado de desenvolvimento. Código numérico para determinar o grau de desenvolvimento embrionário: N° 1: ovócito não fertilizado ou embrião de uma célula (1 dia). N° 2: Identifica embriões com 2 a 16 células (2-4 dias). N° 3: Identifica mórulas adiantadas (5-6 dias). N° 4: Identifica mórulas compactas de 6 dias de idade. N° 5: blastocisto adiantado (7 dias). N° 6: blastocisto (7-8 dias). N° 7: blastocisto expandido (8-9 dias). N° 8: blastocisto eclodido (9 dias) a partir do nono ou décimo dia o blastocisto já está fora da zona pelúcida. Além da classificação por estado de desenvolvimento, a referida Sociedade Internacional estabeleceu uma categorização dos embriões com base na qualidade dos mesmos. Assim os denomina: 1: excelente; 2: bom; 3: regular; 4: degenerado. Segundo as investigações de diversos autores especialistas no tema não devem ser transferidos embriões que não tenham sido classificados como excelentes ou bons. A obtenção dos embriões pode ser realizada em uma clínica, em unidades móveis especializadas, ou na própria fazenda. Em todo o caso, a doadora não deve apresentar quaisquer sintomas clínicos de doença, sendo esta responsabilidade direta do veterinário. O rebanho de onde provém a doadora deve estar livre de medidas cautelares sanitárias. Os técnicos devem estar adequadamente limpos e preparados para esta atuação, em um lugar tranquilo e que permita a colocação de equipamentos e material em condições limpas e seguras. 4. TÉCNICAS DE TRANSFERÊNCIA DE EMBRIÕES Recomenda-se que os embriões sejam transferidos o mais rápido possível depois da recuperação. A fêmea receptora deve apresentar um ambiente uterino o mais semelhante possível ao da fêmea doadora. Isto quer dizer que a receptora também será mantida num sistema de sincronização para que coincida o mais possível o estágio de desenvolvimento embrionário com seu correspondente estado uterino. A margem de assincronia para evitar efeitos indesejáveis é de ± 24 horas. Os métodos hormonais de sincronização são análogos aos das doadoras. As técnicas para a deposição dos embriões no seu novo habitat podem ser igualmente cirúrgicas e não cirúrgicas, mas devido aos problemas do uso de anestésicos em técnicas cirúrgicas, as transferências foram direcionadas para modelos não-cirúrgicos ou transcervicais. Este método é baseado na utilização do colo uterino de forma análoga como é realizada na inseminação artificial. Devido às relações entre o embrião e o ovário, as porcentagens de fertilidade são aumentadas ao serem depositadas no corno ipsilateral no ovário que se encontra ativo. A utilização desta técnica implica na obtenção de mais fêmeas gestantes. O uso de novilhas como fêmeas receptoras aumenta também a taxa de gestações a partir de uma maior facilidade de manejo, uniformidade na resposta hormonal e um custo mais baixo. O fator humano ou habilidade do técnico que realiza esta técnica também constitui um fator que influencia decisivamente no êxito da transferência, encontrando-se variações de 20 a 60% devidas a este fator. 5. CONTROLES SANITÁRIOS Com a utilização da inseminação artificial, verificou-se que, embora as tecnologias reprodutivas colaborativas fossem mais avançadas em termos de técnicas destinadas a aumentar a produtividade individual, da mesma forma, podem constituir um perigo de contaminação e de dispersão de doenças estrangeiras para o grupo ou rebanho para onde são transferidos os novos genes. Neste contexto, a transferência embrionária (TE) deve realizar-se tendo em conta os riscos que pode implicar uma manipulação inadequada. Uma vez mais, a Sociedade Internacional (IETS) na Reunião Regional da OIE (Oficina Internacional de Epizootias) estabeleceu as normas em 1985 para que a TE pudesse ser utilizada como meio para controle de doenças na pecuária. Para que a utilização da TE se realize sem risco para a saúde, é necessário ter em conta um certo número de regras e condições específicas que evitem os riscos de contaminação. O embrião está separado do meio externo por três barreiras de proteção: o corpo da mãe, o útero por si só e a terceira, e mais importante, pela zona pelúcida, a qual nos animais domésticos tem demonstrado ser totalmente impermeável a qualquer elemento patogênico, desde que fique intacta. Portanto, o risco de contaminação dos embriões pode vir por duas vias diferentes: a) Fatores extrínsecos - por invasão dos agentes patogênicos na cavidade uterina principalmente. Isto está relacionado com o estado sanitário médio do país, região ou rebanho de origem. b) Fatores intrínsecos - Segundo Thibier podemos considerar diferentes fontes potenciais de contaminação, que segundo o risco sanitário se classificam nas seguintes ordens: 1° Zigoto. 2° Penetração. 3° Absorção. 4° Armazenamento. 5° Exame. 6° Transferência. Os esforços para que os embriões se tornem livres de contaminação devem ser semelhantes aos que são efetuados com os animais vivos e com as doses seminais. O momento mais perigoso encontra-se entre a coleta das células fecundadas e a sua deposição, após seu exame, no trato reprodutivo da receptora. As condições em que o referido processo deve ser realizado encontram-se detalhadas no manual da Sociedade Internacional de Transferência de Embriões (IETS). 6. REGRAS DA IETS A transferência de embriões é a via mais segura para a troca de genes. No entanto, os técnicos devem esforçar-se por manter todas as regras e normas sanitárias para que a coleta e a manipulação dos embriões se realizem sob condições de absoluta garantia higiênica e sanitária. A transferência embrionária implica, pela primeira vez na história da medicina veterinária, que a vigilância sanitária não se aplica estritamente ao animal, uma vez que, na sua fase "in vitro", está inteiramente sob o controle do técnico. Por conseguinte, não haverá futuro para este tipo de biotecnologia se, paralelamente, não houver um elevado nível de garantia de que não «servirá» para não disseminar ou difundir doenças. As conclusões da Sociedade Internacional de Transferência de Embriões (IETS) na sua reunião anual de 14 de Janeiro de 1992 estabelecem, tendo em conta a revisão efetuada em 1991 pela Subdireção de Investigação e pelo Comitê de Importação e Exportação, uma classificação das doenças. Esta classificação corresponde às seguintes categorias: Categoria 1 - Doenças ou agentes de doenças para as quais foram recolhidas provas suficientes para afirmar que o risco de transmissão é negligenciável, desde que os embriões sejam corretamente manipulados entre a coleta e a transferência: a) Leucose bovina enzoótica. b) Febre aftosa (bovinos). c) Língua azul (bovinos). d) Brucelose bovina. e) Rintraqueíte infecciosa bovina. f) Doença de Aujeszky. Categoria 2 - Doenças para as quais foram recolhidas provas substanciais que indicam que o risco de transmissão é insignificante, desde que os embriões sejam corretamente manipulados entre a coleta e a transferência, mas para as quais é necessário verificar os dados existentes através de novas transferências: a) Peste suína clássica. Categoria 3 - Doenças ou agentes de doenças para as quais os resultados preliminares indicam que o risco de transmissão é insignificante, desde que os embriões sejam corretamente manipulados, entre a coleta e a transferência, mas para os quais essas verificações preliminares devem ser corroboradas por dados experimentais complementares "in vitro" e "in vivo": a) Peste bovina. b) Diarreia viral bovina. c) Língua azul (ovinos). d) Febre aftosa (suínos, ovelhas e cabras). e) Campylobacter fetus (ovinos). f) Doença vesicular do porco. g) Peste suína africana. h) Prurido lombar (ovinos). i) Haemophilus somnus. Categoria 4 - Doenças ou agentes de doenças que foram ou são objeto de trabalhos preliminares: a) Vírus Akabane (bovino). b) Estomatite vesicular (bovinos e suínos). c) Chlamydia psittaci (bovinos e suínos). d) Ureaplasma/micoplasmose (bovinos e caprinos). e) Maedi-visna (ovino). f) Adenomatosa pulmonar (ovino). g) Prurido lombar (caprinos). h) Língua azul (caprinos). i) Artrite e encefalite caprina. j) Parvovírus (suíno). k) Enterovírus (bovinos e suínos). I) Leptospirose (suíno). m) Herpesvírus 4 dos bovinos. n) Mycobacterium paratuberculose (bovinos). o) brucelose ovina. p) Doença de Border (ovinos). q) Vírus parainfluenza 3 (bovinos). r) Agente da encefalopatia espongiforme bovina. É interessante salientar que apenas seis doenças estão incluídas na categoria 1 (a mais segura). Isso não significa que as outras doenças tenham um risco maior, apenas indica que o risco de transmissão das doenças da categoria 1 é irrelevante, estatisticamente falando. É importante assinalar que as doenças mais importantes dos bovinos se situam na categoria 1. Isto significa que a incidência do embrião patogênico nos bovinos parece ser perfeitamente controlável, desde que sejam adotadas metodologias adequadas. Isto serve também como linha de defesa adicional para que o técnico centre sua atenção e cuidados entre a fase de obtenção e a de transferência. 7. SITUAÇÃO ATUAL DA TRANSFERÊNCIA DE EMBRIÕES ANIMAIS NO BRASIL O Brasil é um dos grandes responsáveis mundiais pela implantação da tecnologia na reprodução animal, sendo assim, o país conseguiu inserir-se no mercado internacional como um dos maiores produtores de embriões in vivo e in vitro. Nas últimas duas décadas, especialmente entre os anos de 1997 e 2017 o país passou por importantes transformações nesse segmento, dentre essas transformações vale destacar a posição relativa do Brasil no contexto mundial. O Brasil passou de referência regional, nos anos 1990, para se tornar o maior produtor mundial de embriões entre os anos 2012 e 2013, sendo líder no uso e na produção de embriões in vitro. Os primeiros registros da TE produzidos in vivo no Brasil datam da década de 1980, e uma década depois o país já tornara-se referência e detinha um mercado consolidado de produção e TE na espécie bovina. Não obstante, no ano de 1997 o país ainda era referência apenas no contexto regional, detendo 68,3% dos embriões transferidos na América Latina, esse percentual corresponde a 24.085 embriões de um total de 35.254 produzidos na América Latina. Esse percentual regional representa apenas 6,6% de toda a produção mundial de embriões in vivo, que produziu, em 1997, 360.656 embriões in vivo. Nos últimos anos, o mercado de embriões, principalmente o bovino, teve retração moderada de -2,5% ao ano entre 2003 e 2018, porém essa retração contrasta com o ligeiro crescimento observado a partir dos anos 2000 conforme figura 1: Figura 1: Produção de embriões bovinos no Brasil no período 1996-2018, total e por tecnologia adotada (in vivo[IVD] ou in vitro [IVP]). Em 2018, o mercado de embriões bovinos manteve-se inalterado se compararmos com os três anos anteriores, houve reduções nós segmentos de corte, leite e no total comparado ao ano de 2017. Em 2014, a produção de embriões para melhoramento do gado leiteiro teve seu ápice, porém de lá para cá esse mercado manteve-se estagnado como demonstra a tabela 2. Tabela 2: Produção de embriões bovinos no Brasil em 2018, estratificada por segmento e por tecnologia adotada (in vivo ou in vitro). 7.1 Crise, economia e mercado de embriões A indústria de embriões reflete, em maior ou menor grau, o momento da economia brasileira. Apesar do segmento agropecuário ser um setor em constante crescimento no país, ao qual, sem dúvidas, em meio a inúmeras crises mantém-se em constante crescimento. Porém vale ressaltar que esse mercado é emergente e está refletido em paralelo com os bens produzidos pelo país, como demonstra a figura 2. Cada vez mais o setor agropecuário do Brasil investe em novas tecnologias que maximizem o mercado e que melhore a produção dos animais seja no segmento corte ou leite. Segundo a OCDE, 1997, essa indústria da produção de embriões é um conjunto de novas técnicas e processos, frutos do desenvolvimento técnico-científico, que chega ao mercado e - o mais importante - o transforma. Logo, todas essas técnicas e biotecnologias visam, além da alta produção e do lucro, o melhoramento e a suplementação alimentícia da população mundial que está em crescente avanço. A evolução da tecnologia embrionária no país, seja para o melhoramento dos equinos para os esportes como as vaquejadas, hipismo, corridas, etc., onde são investidos tempo, dedicação e dinheiro para formar um novo animal que apresente força, conformação, conversão alimentar e que custa milhões, em muitos casos, não só dos equinos, mas também dos caprinos, ovinos, suínos e até mesmo os bovinos onde o mercado da TE é mais presente e aquecida, venceu os estigmas do “modismo” e o chamado “elitismo”, porém deve enfrentar novos desafios, em especial num contexto de forte concentração do mercado de genética e de concorrência globalizada. Mesmo com todos esses avanços e retrocessos, essa relativização dos números demonstra que um percentual bastante reduzido das fêmeas bovinas que estão em idade reprodutiva é utilizado para a técnica da transferência de embriões, e que o mercado brasileiro ainda tem um grande potencial de crescimento no setor de produção in vivo e in vitro. 8. RESUMO E PRIMEIRAS CONCLUSÕES Ao longo deste trabalho pretendi realizar uma revisão sumária sobre um tema de grande importância presente, e sobretudo futura; referir-me à transferência embrionária. Atualmente, esta técnica atingiu um grau notável de penetração, a nível prático, no gado leiteiro. No entanto, num futuro mais ou menos longínquo, não temos dúvidas quanto a esta técnica, pelas vantagens indubitáveis que apresenta a nível de avanço genético, que será aplicada em outras espécies úteis ao homem. Na minha exposição, tentei dar especial ênfase a dois aspectos: as técnicas de transferência, incluindo as normas IETS e os controles sanitários a serem efetuados. Por fim, a indústria brasileira de embriões mostrou-se em retrocessos e avanços, porém o mercado ainda têm grandes desafios a serem enfrentados ao longo dos anos, mas que serão sanados mediante as técnicas desenvolvidas pelos inúmeros centros de pesquisa embrionárias e seus especialistas. -/- Realização -/- Emanuel Isaque Cordeiro da Silva – Departamento de Zootecnia da UFRPE. After the discoveries of such scholars as J. H. Poincaré, E. N. Lorenz, I. Prigogine, etc. the term ‘chaos’ is used actively by representatives of various scientific fields; however, one important aspect remains uninvestigated: which attitude one should have toward chaotic phenomena. This is a philosophical question and my dissertation aims to find the answer in the history of philosophy, where chaos theme has had its investigators from ancient philosophy to the philosophical theories of the 21st century. My dissertation is (...) based on the idea that sciences and philosophy can achieve significant success in exploring chaos theme when their efforts are combined. This dissertation research is designed to help in the planning of conscious, rational actions towards chaotic phenomena, since it is aimed at exploration and systematic presentation, as well as comprehension of possible systems of such actions – philosophical strategies for interacting with chaos. -/- Results of the dissertation are the following. I reveal, reconstruct, and explain the content of six possible strategies for interacting with chaos that were worked out in history of philosophical thought: ordering, avoiding, transfiguring, preventing, controlling, and integrating. I argue that the first philosophical strategies for interacting with chaos were worked out in the 19th century by German philosophers K. W. F. Schlegel and F. W. Nietzsche on the basis of their rethinking the ideas which were expressed by different thinkers during classical antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the modern period. I show that ideas of strategic views towards chaos were also elaborated by such 20th-century thinkers as H. Rickert, N. Berdyaev, I. Prigogine, H. Haken, G. Deleuze, Q. Meillassoux, and others. I outline the main stages of the evolution of philosophical strategies for interacting with chaos as well as its regularities. The dissertation shows perspectives of further development of each one of the six strategies for interacting with chaos. -/- In contemporary scientific and philosophical research on chaos, my exploration contributes to the new approach to improving the understanding of aims of acts towards chaotic phenomena. I think that knowing a range of different strategic views of chaos help researchers of chaotic phenomena to choose the most appropriate and rational reactions. In the area of history of philosophy, my research contributes detailed data about development and conceptual transformations of the notion of ‘chaos’ through all periods of Western philosophy. -/- The dissertation consists of five chapters: 1) Literature Review, Methodology and Key Research Terms, 2) Ancient and Medieval Philosophical Ideas about Chaos, 3) Genesis of the First Strategies for Interacting with Chaos, 4) Strategies for Interacting with Chaos in the 20th and 21st Centuries, 5) Regularities and Prospects of the Development of Philosophical Strategies for Interacting with Chaos. In the first chapter I analyze more than five hundred books, articles, and other philosophical and scientific sources in which the chaos theme is raised. I also argue the necessity of applying methods such as analysis, the structural method, the hermeneutic method of interpretation, and the comparative method in my dissertation research. Moreover, in this chapter, I define key terms for my dissertation – ‘chaos’ and ‘philosophical strategies for interacting with chaos.’ -/- Then, in the next chapter, I analyze the appearance and development of Ancient and Medieval philosophical ideas about chaotic phenomena and order. Particularly, I explore thoughts of philosophers such as Anaxagoras, Anaximander, Heraclitus, Empedocles, Plato, Aristotle, Augustine of Hippo, Bernard Silvestris, Ramon Llull, etc. In this chapter I also compare the first Western ideas about chaos with similar thoughts from Eastern philosophy, analyzing Indian and Chinese philosophical ideas about disorder. -/- In the third chapter I explore transformations in understanding the meaning of the term ‘chaos’ in philosophy from the 15th to the end of the 19th century. I analyze ideas about chaos and order from thinkers such as M. Ficino, Paracelsus, F. Bacon, P. Bayle, Voltaire, J. G. Herder, I. Kant, F. W. J. Schelling and other philosophers from the Renaissance, the Age of Enlightenment, and the German idealist period, showing that these thinkers’ new approaches to interpreting the notion of ‘chaos’ were the background for K. W. F. Schlegel’s and F. W. Nietzsche’s creations of the first strategies for interacting with chaos in the 19th century. I finish the chapter with detailed analysis of K. W. F. Schlegel’s strategy for transfiguring chaos and F. W. Nietzsche’s strategy for ordering chaos. -/- The development of philosophical strategies for interacting with chaos in the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century is the topic of the fourth chapter. I research new ideas about ordering chaos (H. Rickert) and transfiguring chaos (N. Berdyaev). Also, I reveal thoughts about avoiding chaos (A. Camus), preventing chaos (J. Ortega y Gasset), integrating chaos (G. Deleuze, Q. Meillassoux). Moreover, I analyze a philosophical component of the strategy for chaos control (I. Prigogine, H. Haken). In the final fifth chapter of the dissertation I trace the major features of philosophical strategies for interacting with chaos and find out the main conditions and periods of their development. Then I outline the prospects for the development of the philosophical strategies for interacting with chaos and show the most productive ways of their progress. (shrink)

Azərbaycan elm tarixini tədqiq edərkən dövrün tələbindən çıxış edilərək ərəb və fars dillərində yazılmış çoxlu əsərlərə rast gəlirik. Bu əsərlərdən biri də dahi alim Nəsirəddin Tusinin fars dilində məntiqə dair yazdığı Əsasül-iqtibas əsəridir. Əsər ilk dəfə 2022-ci ildə nəşr edilərək oxucu və tədqiqatçıların ixtiyarına verilmişdir. Əsasül-iqtibas əsəri XIII əsrin ortalarında yazılmışdır. Əsərin yazılmasından təqribən səkkiz əsrə yaxın vaxt keçmişdir. Bu müddət ərzində həmin əsərdə istifadə edilən bir sıra termin və sözlər artıq müasir fars dilində istifadə edilmir. Əsərin məntiqə aid olması (...) və həm də bir sıra sözlərin günümüzdə istifadə edilməməsi onun tərcüməsini çətinləşdirən amillər kimi qeyd etmək olar. Bundan əlavə burada istifadə edilən bəzi terminlərin gündəlik danışığımzda fərqli mənada istifadə edildiyindən həmin sözlərin və terminlərin izah edilməsi zərurəti yaranmışdır. Habelə orta əsr müəlliflərinin əsərlərinin tədqiqi zamanı eyni bir sözün müxtəlif müəlliflər tərəfindən fərqli mənalarda işlədildiyinin də şahidi oluruq ki, bu da həmin termin və anlayışların Azərbaycan dilinə tərcüməsi zamanı izahının verilməsinə ehtiyac yaradır. Bu lüğətlərin tərcüməsi və izahı ilə tanış olmaqla Nəsirəddin Tusinin ərəb-fars dillərində yazılmış digər əsərlərinin tərcüməsi zamanı da yararlanmaq olar. Müəyyən bir ixtisas və peşəni və ya həmin peşə və ixtisasa aid olan terminləri başa düşmək üçün həmin istiqamət üzrə tərtib edilən terminolji lüğətlərə ehtiyac duyulur. Bu istiqamətdə zaman-zaman müxtəlif ixtisaslar üzrə terminoloji lüğətlərin nəşr edildiyini müşahidə edirik. Bir tərəfdən, yaranmış boşluğu doldurmaq, digər tərəfdən isə məntiq ixtisası üzrə təhsil alan tələbə və mütəxəssislərə kömək etmək üçün bu lüğəti tərtib etmək qərarına gəldik. 222 sözün izah və tərcüməsindən ibarət olan bu kitabı həmin istiqamətdə olan boşluğu doldurmaq üçün kiçik və eyni zamanda mühüm bir addım hesab etmək olar. Burada sözlərin tərcüməsi ilə yanaşı bir sıra terminlərin izahı da verilmişdir. Əsasən Əsasül-iqtibas adlı məntiqi əsəri tərcümə edərkən qarşıya çıxan çətin və mürəkkəb sözlərin izahının verilməsinə üstünlük verilmişdir. Tərcümə zamanı müxtəlif illərdə nəşr edilən Əsasül-iqtibas əsərlərinə də müraciət edilmişdir. Bu əsərlərin bəzisində Əsasül-iqtibas əsərində istifadə edilən bəzi terminlərin izahı da verilmişdir. Bu izahlar bəzən tərcümə zamanı ifadənin daha səlis və daha dəqiq başa düşülməsinə imkan vermişdir. Bu lüğət kitabı tərtib edilərkən həmin əsərlərdə mövcud olan terminlər və onların izahından da istifadə edilmişdir. This essay develops an inferential account of model explanation, based on Mauricio Suárez’s inferential conception of scientific representation and Alisa Bokulich’s counterfactual account of model explanation. It is suggested that the fact that a scientific model can explain is essentially linked to how a modeler uses an established model to make various inferences about the target system on the basis of results derived from the model. The inference practice is understood as a two-step activity, with the first step involving making (...) counterfactual statements about the model itself and the second step involving making hypothetical statements transferring over claims derived from the model onto the target. To illustrate how this two-step activity proceeds, an agent-based simulation model is discussed. (shrink)

Michael Weisberg’s account of scientific models concentrates on the ways in which models are similar to their targets. He intends not merely to explain what similarity consists in, but also to capture similarity judgments made by scientists. In order to scrutinize whether his account fulfills this goal, I outline one common way in which scientists judge whether a model is similar enough to its target, namely maximum likelihood estimation method. Then I consider whether Weisberg’s account could capture the judgments involved (...) in this practice. I argue that his account fails for three reasons. First, his account is simply too abstract to capture what is going on in MLE. Second, it implies an atomistic conception of similarity, while MLE operates in a holistic manner. Third, Weisberg’s atomistic conception of similarity can be traced back to a problematic set-theoretic approach to the structure of models. Finally, I tentatively suggest how these problems might be solved by a holistic approach in which models and targets are compared in a non-set-theoretic fashion. (shrink)

Polger and Shapiro argue that their official recipe, a criterion for judging when the phenomenon of multiple realization exists, renders MR less widespread than its proponents have assumed. I argue that, although Polger and Shapiro’s criterion is a useful contribution, they arrive at their conclusion too hastily. Contrary to Polger and Shapiro, I claim that the phenomenon of multiple realization in the biological world, judged by their criterion, is not as scarce as they suggest. To show this, an updated official (...) recipe, namely a multiple mechanistic realization thesis, integrating Polger and Shapiro’s criterion with a compositional conception of realization, is developed. Then, three examples of varied kinds are examined, showing that cases of MR are not so hard to find in the biological world. (shrink)

Stephen Yablo’s notion of proportionality, despite controversies surrounding it, has played a significant role in philosophical discussions of mental causation and of high-level causation more generally. In particular, it is invoked in James Woodward’s interventionist account of high-level causation and explanation, and is implicit in a novel approach to constructing variables for causal modeling in the machine learning literature, known as causal feature learning (CFL). In this article, we articulate an account of proportionality inspired by both Yablo’s account of proportionality (...) and the CFL account of variable construction. The resulting account has at least three merits. First, it illuminates an important feature of the notion of proportionality, when it is adapted to a probabilistic and interventionist framework. The feature is that at the center of the notion of proportionality lies the concept of “determinate intervention effects.” Second, it makes manifest a virtue of (common types of) high-level causal/explanatory statements over low-level ones, when relevant intervention effects are determinate. Third, it overcomes a limitation of the CFL framework and thereby also addresses a challenge to interventionist accounts of high-level causation. (shrink)

In this essay I suggest that we view design principles in systems biology as minimal models, for a design principle usually exhibits universal behaviors that are common to a whole range of heterogeneous (living and nonliving) systems with different underlying mechanisms. A well-known design principle in systems biology, integral feedback control, is discussed, showing that it satisfies all the conditions for a model to be a minimal model. This approach has significant philosophical implications: it not only accounts for how design (...) principles explain, but also helps clarify one dispute over design principles, e.g., whether design principles provide mechanistic explanations or a distinct kind of explanations called design explanations. In this essay I propose that what design principles in systems biology and systems neuroscience do is to present abstract characterizations of mechanisms, and thereby facilitate mechanistic explanation. To show this, one design principle in systems neuroscience, i.e., the multilayer perceptron, is examined. However, Braillard (2010) contends that design principles provide a sort of non-mechanistic explanation due to two related reasons: they are very general and describe non-causal dependence relationships. This essay considers a mixed-effects modeling practice and its implications for the philosophical debate surrounding reductive explanation. Mixed-effects modeling is a species of the multilevel modeling practice, where a single model incorporates simultaneously two (or even more) levels of explanatory variables to explain a phenomenon of interest. I argue that this practice makes the position of explanatory reductionism held by many philosophers untenable because it violates two central tenets of explanatory reductionism: single-level preference and lower-level obsession.

This article argues for the explanatory autonomy of psychology drawing on cases from the multilevel modeling practice. This is done by considering a multilevel linear model in personality and social psychology, and discussing its philosophical implications for the reductionism debate in philosophy of psychology. I argue that this practice challenges the reductionist position in philosophy of psychology, and supports the explanatory autonomy of psychology.

I propose a dynamic causal approach to characterizing the notion of a mechanism. Levy and Bechtel, among others, have pointed out several critical limitations of the new mechanical philosophy, and pointed in a new direction to extend this philosophy. Nevertheless, they have not fully fleshed out what that extended philosophy would look like. Based on a closer look at neuroscientific practice, I propose that a mechanism is a dynamic causal system that involves various components interacting, typically nonlinearly, with one another (...) to produce a phenomenon of interest. In a given polity, interactions between the Governed and the Governing Strata are symbiotic. The Governed desire, and indeed need, infrastructure services organized. If such basic foundations are not provided, the economic activity so deeply cherished by both groups cannot be realized. The Governing Strata cannot function without the Governed. After all, without the Governed, there will not be a polity; hence nothing to govern. Regardless of the politico-economic system in effect, this co-dependence is inevitable, inescapable, indenturing both groups to (...) each other. This is the case, regardless of the designation, functions, or the style of the governance system. Polger and Shapiro (2016) claim that unlike human-made artifacts cases of multiple realization in naturally occurring systems are uncommon. Drawing on cases from systems biology, I argue that multiple realization in naturally occurring systems is not as uncommon as Polger and Shapiro initially thought. The relevant cases, which I draw from systems biology, involve generalizable design principles called network motifs which recur in different organisms and species and perform specific functions. I show that network motifs with entirely different underlying causal (...) structures can perform the same function of interest. The article also considers the scope problem of multiple realization. Using content analysis, a systematic evaluation of texts to examine nuances to bridge the gap between quantitative and qualitative data. This was such of importance, however, difficult to study due to issues of interest like in the study, frequency of lexical items in ESP, and GE textbooks. Results found 13,713 lexical items in Hospitality Management, 17,561 in Criminology, 4576 in Tourism, (...) 7167 in Marine Engineering, and 512 in Information Technology. Furthermore, the overall percentage of ESP lexical items fell in Tier 2 (with multiple-meaning while the least was in Tier 3, specifically on context-specific vocabulary. It is the core of vocabulary learning to ensure English language teaching. It is its goal to help learners better understand language, allowing them to understand others as they want to express themselves as well. This applies not only in speaking but also in writing and reading. Wilkins (1972, p. 111-112) stated that without grammar very little understanding can be acquired and without vocabulary there can be no learning at all. Thus, even without good grammar, so long as you equipped with useful words and expression, one can still manage to communicate. Lewis (1993) argued that “lexis is the heart of language” and that it develops a better fluency and expression in English. He also added the significance to the learners of acquiring a more productive vocabulary knowledge, also, their eagerness to develop their own personal vocabulary strategies. Thus, a proposed bridge model program was recommended to highlight the study findings using the lexicons found from the different respective courses. (shrink)

The purpose of the study. The aims of this research are to determine the teachers' reading style, determine their reading speed, and determine which reading methods are the teachers' strengths and weaknesses utilizing a thorough evaluation of reading techniques from Hawker Brownlow Education. This study utilized the comprehensive assessment of reading strategies from Hawker Brownlow Education. This material is composed of four series of tests namely, Reading Comprehension 1- Historical Fiction, Reading Comprehension 2- History Article, Reading Comprehension 3- Kate Wrote (...) About a Special Zoo, and Reading Comprehension 4- Email written by Carl with different reading passages using the same 12 reading strategies. It is found that readers can effectively comprehend when they use the following strategies namely, finding word meaning in context, understanding sequence, and making predictions. Therefore, the four series of assessments, show that there are varied ways of comprehending a material that might directly influence the duration and time limit allocated in reading and answering the material, the recurring events of the same material used, and the scheduling of reading comprehension tests. According to the orthodox treatment of risk preferences in decision theory, they are to be explained in terms of the agent's desires about concrete outcomes. The orthodoxy has been criticised both for conflating two types of attitudes and for committing agents to attitudes that do not seem rationally required. To avoid these problems, it has been suggested that an agent's attitudes to risk should be captured by a risk function that is independent of her utility and probability functions. The main (...) problem with that approach is that it suggests that attitudes to risk are wholly distinct from people's (non-instrumental) desires. To overcome this problem, we develop a framework where an agent's utility function is defined over chance propositions (i.e., propositions describing objective probability distributions) as well as ordinary (non-chance) ones, and argue that one should explain different risk attitudes in terms of different forms of the utility function over such propositions. ABSTRACT Offsetting is a very ineffective way to do good. Offsetting your lifetime emissions may increase aggregated life expectancy by at most seven years, while giving the amount it costs to offset your lifetime emissions to a malaria charity saves in expectation the life of at least one child. Is there any moral reason to offset rather than giving to some charity that does good so much more effectively? There might be such a reason if your offsetting compensated or somehow (...) benefitted the victims of your emission, since that could mean that you would satisfy the duty not to harm others by emitting and offsetting. But that is typically not true. If your emission harms some person and your offsetting benefits some person, then these are most likely different people. Hence, I conclude, we have a stronger reason to give to effective charities than we have to offset our emissions. (shrink)

Is the societal-level of analysis sufficient today to understand the values of those in the global workforce? Or are individual-level analyses more appropriate for assessing the influence of values on ethical behaviors across country workforces? Using multi-level analyses for a 48-society sample, we test the utility of both the societal-level and individual-level dimensions of collectivism and individualism values for predicting ethical behaviors of business professionals. Our values-based behavioral analysis indicates that values at the individual-level make a more significant contribution to (...) explaining variance in ethical behaviors than do values at the societal-level. Implicitly, our findings question the soundness of using societal-level values measures. Implications for international business research are discussed. (shrink)

The veil of ignorance argument was used by John C. Harsanyi to defend Utilitarianism and by John Rawls to defend the absolute priority of the worst off. In a recent paper, Lara Buchak revives the veil of ignorance argument, and uses it to defend an intermediate position between Harsanyi's and Rawls' that she calls Relative Prioritarianism. None of these authors explore the implications of allowing that agent's behind the veil are averse to ambiguity. Allowing for aversion to ambiguity---which is both (...) the most commonly observed and a seemingly reasonable attitude to ambiguity---however supports a version of Egalitarianism, whose logical form is quite different from the theories defended by the aforementioned authors. Moreover, it turns out that the veil of ignorance argument neither supports standard Utilitarianism nor Prioritarianism unless we assume that rational people are insensitive to ambiguity. (shrink)

Jordan agreed to extensive liberalization undertakings under the General Agreement on Trade in Services (“GATS”) that would open some sectors that were previously closed or restricted to foreign suppliers and investors. It undertook horizontal commitments in cross-border movement of individuals and commercial presence covering all types of services.

I defend a weak version of the Pigou-Dalton principle for chances. The principle says that it is better to increase the survival chance of a person who is more likely to die rather than a person who is less likely to die, assuming that the two people do not differ in any other morally relevant respect. The principle justifies plausible moral judgements that standard ex post views, such as prioritarianism and rank-dependent egalitarianism, cannot accommodate. However, the principle can be justified (...) by the same reasoning that has recently been used to defend the core axiom of ex post prioritarianism and egalitarianism, namely, Pigou-Dalton for well-being. The arguably biggest challenge for proponents of Pigou-Dalton for chances is that it violates State Dominance for social prospects. However, I argue that we have independent reason for rejecting State Dominance for social prospects, since it prevents a social planner from properly respecting people's preferences. (shrink)

Philosophers debate whether fictional time can be tensed, whether fictional time can branch, repeat, pause, rewind, or skip and whether fictional time travel is possible. Much of the way we answer these questions will depend on our overall commitment to the nature of fiction.
